Here's a rare 1940s-era color photo of a "Big Red Car" rolling past the old Greyhound terminal in downtown Los Angeles (talk about a long-lost era!)

Like many early bus companies, countless streetcar companies fiercly held onto their five-cent fares for years (in NYC, fare remained at five cents from 1904 through 1948!) (Fifth Avenue Coach Company charged a dime!)

There were a number of traction companies, when the fares were raised above 5 cents, began using tokens (PSNJ was one of these companies)..........

The Southern California Railway Museum, formerly Orange Empire Trolley and then Railway Museum, appears to have 3 blimps and 5 Hollywood cars. Their Northern California counterpart may have some blimps too since they originated up there even though they weren't referred to as blimps.

I am MORE than pleased to hear that FIVE "Hollywood" cars survive; MORE than I thought were still with us! Wink

Makes me think of these cars in a train pullling out of Toluca Yard, heading for the Subway Terminal, at the beginning of the afternoon rush! Very Happy

Too bad not more "Blimps" survive; but, at least these THREE fortunate cars do! Wink

I only remember two or maybe three Hollywoods the last time I was there. Don't know where the others came from unless they had them stored somewhere out of sight 40 years ago.

Further:

Would like to see at least a few sets of LA light rail trains painted up in "heritage" colors for LARy and the early MTA.

And, perhaps, a "Red Line" set or two, painted to pay homage to the "Red Cars"

LA has a truly rich, diverse, and colorful legacy; it should be remembered, and not forgotten.....
