Thought you'd find this interesting.....
In "PACIFIC ELECTRIC RED CARS" (Jim Walker). at the top of page 94, we see a 'Hollywood" car on Hollywood Boulevard, during an early 1050s Christmas season.
On the right, note the prominent Warner Brothers movie house; in the early 1950s, Carol Burnette was employed there part-time as an usherette!

Here's a rare 1940s-era color photo of a "Big Red Car" rolling past the old Greyhound terminal in downtown Los Angeles (talk about a long-lost era!)

Yep, the cities expected the streetcar companies to make it on fare box revenues and not raise their fares enough to cover expenses. Years later, the cities talk the people into voting for transit taxes so they can waste it on expensive and inefficient LRV systems. Phoenix is a prime example. |

Like many early bus companies, countless streetcar companies fiercly held onto their five-cent fares for years (in NYC, fare remained at five cents from 1904 through 1948!) (Fifth Avenue Coach Company charged a dime!)
There were a number of traction companies, when the fares were raised above 5 cents, began using tokens (PSNJ was one of these companies)..........

Thanks, NYO. This extends my knowledge of transit in Honolulu beyond what I've observed in Hawaii Five-O! |

You might know the answer here......
How many "Hollywood" cars survive?
How many "Blimps"?
I'm going to guess maybe two of each?
Appreciate info....thank you

The Southern California Railway Museum, formerly Orange Empire Trolley and then Railway Museum, appears to have 3 blimps and 5 Hollywood cars. Their Northern California counterpart may have some blimps too since they originated up there even though they weren't referred to as blimps.

Greatly appreciate the info....thank you!
I am MORE than pleased to hear that FIVE "Hollywood" cars survive; MORE than I thought were still with us!
Makes me think of these cars in a train pullling out of Toluca Yard, heading for the Subway Terminal, at the beginning of the afternoon rush!
Too bad not more "Blimps" survive; but, at least these THREE fortunate cars do!
Thanks again for the info!

I only remember two or maybe three Hollywoods the last time I was there. Don't know where the others came from unless they had them stored somewhere out of sight 40 years ago. |

Imagine if the old Subway Terminal platform/concourse area could have somehow been tied into one of the current LA electric rail systems?
I DO like the idea of modern rolling stock painted in traditional "Red Car" liveries.........

Further:
Would like to see at least a few sets of LA light rail trains painted up in "heritage" colors for LARy and the early MTA.
And, perhaps, a "Red Line" set or two, painted to pay homage to the "Red Cars"
LA has a truly rich, diverse, and colorful legacy; it should be remembered, and not forgotten.....

This Art Deco-style sign and the distinctive columns flanking it hint at the concourse of the old Subway Terminal.......
