Printed on the back of the 1950 pass:

"DIXIE GREYHOUND LINES, INC."

On the back of the 1954 pass:

"DIXIE GREYHOUND LINES, DIVISION OF THE GREYHOUND CORPORATION"

Both are rubber stamped (on the back):

"RESTRICTIONS REMOVED" (w/E.J.BOMER signature)

Latest arrival......

"GREYHOUND OPERATING MANUAL: PD-4501R"

This fascinating manual is in near-mint condition, and QUITE informative, as you might guess!<G>

An excerpt.....

"USE OF ICC EMERGENCY BRAKE VALVE"

"......this 'ICC BRAKE VALVE' IS FOR EMERGENCY USE ONLY WHEN OPERATOR IS UNABLE TO STOP COACH WITH THE USE OF SERVICE AND HAND BRAKES. APPLYING THE LEVER TO 'EMERG' PRODUCES A QUICK AND SEVERE STOP. THIS SYSTEM MUST NEVER BE USED AS A PARKING BRAKE......"

And the reason for that is that if the air would somehow drain out of that, the coach could roll away. The new 'DD-3' that replaced the hand parking brake did not have that problem. If air pressure was lost, a spring would keep the parking brake applied.
The "PD4501R", was the Scenicruiser after it was rebuilt in 1962 by Marmon-Herrington with the Detroit Diesel 8v-71 engine replacing the twin four cylinder engines the coach was born with. The transmissions were also replaced by a conventional four-speed. And the coach was completely refurbished inside and out as well.

traildriver.......

Here is another excerpt from aforemtioned manual:

"........DO NOT 'fan' the brake pedal. This practice causes poor brake performance, wastes air pressure, and causes excessive wear on brake operating units and brake lining. 'Fanning' DOES NOT increase brake line pressure, but decreases both reservoir and line pressure......."

Typed letter also included in latest "bulk" collection, dated 7/17/58:

EASTERN GREYHOUND LINES

DIVISION OF THE GREYHOUND CORPORATION

2341 CARNEGIE AVENUE

CLEVELEND 15, OHIO

TO: ALL DRIVERS

SUBJECT: DRIVERS TRIP ENVELOPES/TRIP REPORT AND PAYROLL REPORT

EFFECTIVE: IMMEDIATELY

ISSUED BY:

H.W. WALTER

VICE PRESIDENT-COMPTROLLER

Excerpt:

"........driver's payroll reports are being recieved in a mutilated condition from many locations. This situation is largely due to the fact that the new payroll forms are slightly wider than the driver's trip envelopes, and the folded drivers reports, consequently, when they are banded together, the payroll report extends beyond the trip envelope and the trip report........"

Interesting stuff!
Back in the early 1980's, the Universtiy of Wyoming library at Laramie received a gift of over twenty large 'doc boxes' of memorabilia from Greyhound Corporation archives. I believe that this unlikely place was selected to receive this gift simply as a result of it being the alma mater of a top GL official. I spent at least 3 days there perusing the priceless material which in addition to the usual material---annual reports, press releases, timetables, promotional literature, there were original letters of confidential internal communication that is just fascinating to any student of GL or transportation history.
There were also hundreds of 8x10 black and white photo's of various buses including stunning interior shots. I purchased at least 50 various copies. Some day I'll dig them out and try posting them here.
Oh, there were even some of those large plaster depot window model buses and various depot signs.
I don't know if the Coe library still has the collection, or sold it. I tried searching their web site, but was unable to find any mention of it.
I may get ambitious and try contacting them to inquire....

WHOA!

I would have KILLED to have gotten my hands on some of that suff!!

You are quite fortunate indeed to have at least purchased some of those rare old photos!

Speaking of rare 'Hound items, I still have vivid memories of a HUGE (plaster?) "model" SCENICRUISER at the PABT in the early/mid-60's, not long after GREYHOUND abandoned its old W.34th St. terminal.

The top was hollowed out, and this "model" was used as a timetable/brochure rack.....it was HUGE......my memory tells me it had to have been at least 6' in length; I can still remember how authentically detailed this "model" coach was......man, she was a BEAUTY!!

I STILL wonder what ever happened to it.,....hopefully, somewhere along the line, it was saved!

My particular interest in GREYHOUND memorabilia are vintage toy buses, mostly tin (and quite a few SCENICRUISERS!), though, as is obvious, I also enjoy collecting TT's and other memorabilia!

Some of these nostalgic toys are quite realistic and authentic, others, are....shall we say.....QUITE imaginative.....picture the GOLDEN CHARIOT in classic SCENICRUISER paint, if you will, sporting an abbreviated upper deck AND a rooftop luggage rack!

And that's the more SUBTLE of some of the many "fantasy" toy Scenicruisers that were once imported from Japan!

I'll tell ya....it's sure a FUN hobby, my friend!

Yep......hard to believe...but....long, long ago....in a galaxy far, far away.....you could actually ride the 'Hound for under a buck!

Heck, it now costs nearly FOUR BUCKS just to get into the PABT from my area of Bergen County (NJ)!

Those were the days, my friends......
