Further..............
With "Ralph's" seniority, had he driven for a Brooklyn-based company that had a route(s) into Manhattan, I could easily picture him assigned to an inter-borough route..........

It does beg the question as to whether Ralph's route was inter-borough, going as it did thru' Madison . . . |

W.B.:
One also wonders about Ralph's earliest years with the "GBC"; did he drive a Madison Avenue route right from the get-go, or, perhaps, was he assigned to less-prestigious runs, possibly crosstown routes, until he garnerd enough seniority..............

Which was just six blocks away from NYCO's actual depot on 54th and Ninth (which, under later hands - FACL and then " 'stoa" - lasted into the 1990's). |

Could not help but picture a certain "Ralph Kramden" when I heard this on 1010 WINS earlier..........
The MTA has just launched its new hi-tech "bus driver simulator", putting trainees through virtually every type freal-life scenario.
The simulator will allow would-be drivers to go with a diesel, an electric, a hybrid, or an articulated.
Had to chuckle picturing hot-tempered "Ralph" using one of these simulators........

Driver training............
Growing up, I still clearly remember seeing NHBL and PSNJ buses sporting roller signs reading "NO PASSENGERS" or "SPECIAL", along with a small placard in the windshield reading "STUDENT DRIVER" when a "trainee" was behind the wheel.............

Sounds almost like "Em-Tee-Yay" buses today, on their electronic signs flashing "NOT IN SERVICE," followed immediately by "FARE REQUIRED" - |

Perhaps the "Em-Tee-Yay" is following "En-Jay-Tee's" lead..........

1987..........
In that year, the legendary "Great One", Jackie Gleason (aka "Ralph Kramden") passed away.
Mr. Gleason lived well into the RTS era, then the newest members of the MTA fleet.
Also, in 1987, there were still the veteran Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" stil faithfully lon the job......

Thankfully, he had passed on before the first of what we would come to know as "BINO's" - initially all in the "rolling, oversized milk carton" stage - first hit our streets. He outlived "Noo Yawk's" "Kramdens" by fourteen years (on the 'Tee-Yay's' end; the last of the " 'stoa"-inherited lot, originally FACL and ST, were retired the same year his variety show was cancelled in 1970). |
