Indeed, recalling the halcyon days of the "REd Electrics" to and from Oakland Pier, and its ferry connections!
What I find interesting in this photo is that there is no storm door on the lead car, where the headlight is mounted; instead, the front end of the car is "solid"...........

Interesting.........
It would seem that the earliest use of the slogan, "RIDE THE BIG RED CARS", goes back to the earliest "IER" days, beginning in 1939, when the ESPEE's "Red Electric's" began operating ove Bay Bridge.
In the excellent book ""RAILS TO SAN FRANCISCO BAY" (Demoro/Sappers) there is an illustration showing the cover of an early "IER" tt (1939), with "RIDE THE BIG RED CARS" at the top of the timetable cover...........

The straight passenger cars did have the storm door. See:
https://newdavesrailpix.com/odds/or/htm/pee06.htm
These cars were called the "Portland Twelves" on the PE and MU'ed with PE's own 1200's. They were sent to PE around 1927 and don't think any of them went to the Bay area. These were "Red Electrics" but not "blimps." Shorter and narrower. |

"Blimp Jrs"!
Indeed, one can clearly see the differences between the Portland electrics and the ESPEE's cars that operated out of Oakland; interestingly, when new in 1911, the Oakland cars did not have porthole windows.
These cars were later modernized with the portholes, recalling the LIRR and PRR "MP-54s" and the PRSL electrics (ex-West Jersey & Seashore) which operated out of the Camden ferry terminal until just after WW2,,,,,,,,,,

The MP-54"s and the PRSL cars sure had tiny portholes, at least compared to the blimps and even the Portland cars. |

I've seen photos of early London Underground (sub-surface lines) cars and some 1920s-era Berlin "U-Bahn" cars that also had portholes......

An interesting aspect to streetcar/electric railway operations.......
Several electric railways/street railways also, at one time, also operated ferries.
PSNJ operated several busy ferry crossings in NY Harbor until 1943, when the lines were sold to private operators.
The Key System's orange ferries connected with their trains at the railway's ferry pier, for the short crossing to the Ferry Building.
In Boston, the Boston, Revere Beach, & Lynne (electrified in 1928) operated connecting ferriyboats into Boston until the railway was abandoned.
The TCRT also operated small ferries, as extensions to their streetcar lines.
Also, the SN's "RAMON" (the only electrified rail ferry in the nation) once carried both interurban trains and freights)
Electric Railway-operated ferries indeed makes for an interesting subject, indeed.....
