"Poisanally", Your's Truly does not know why tokens had to be phased out at all; WHY everything today has to be all ELECTRONIC, HIGH-TECH, and COMPLICATED!! (PATH phased out tokens way back in 1971)
WHAT was so COMPLEX about taking a TOKEN out of your pocket, dropping your token into a turnstile slot, "CLUNKING" your way through, and, there you were!
Or, simply dropping your token into the fare box aboard a bus?
Ironically, the last mode of "transit" in "Noo Yawk" to use tokens was the Roosevelt Island Tram.
Thankfully, Your's truly retired not all that long after tokens were replaced with Metrocards (I STILL have the monthly PATH card I last used on the morning of 9/11, entering "the tubes" in Hoboken)

And isn't it interesting that now, with MetroCards being phased out and OMNY being instituted, you have a problem with fare evasion. I've seen it upfront, with people entering from the back, not even bothering to "tap" most of the time.
Yep, you were lucky. |

Sad to say, outside of having electric barb wires around the turnstiles, I have the uneasy feeling that fare evasion is, sadly, here to stay.
Ditto, the buses.....let's face it, the olden days of "civilized" mass transit in "Noo Yawk" are long, long gone, never to return.
You'd better believe I'll always count myself VERY lucky to remember the subways as they were........

Time indeed DOES fly.......
You KNOW the years are flying by MUCH TOO FAST when you see an "Are-Tee-Es" in a MUSEUM lineup!!!!!!
Note, also, the Fishbowl, "Dangerfield", "Kramden", and "Patton", along with some other interesting "relics"........

Thinking.........
Back in the early "Are-Tee-Es" era, now over 40 years ago, did we EVER think that, one day, these then-futuristic, startling-looking buses would be considered HISTORIC, and only be found in MUSEUMS?
I know I sure didn't (last I rode were those ex-MTA buses rostered by ACADEMY, and the NOVAs operated by "En-Jay-Tee", many eons ago).........

Moreover, who'd've thought one of the "Em-Tee-Yay's" Grumman "Borough Bombers" would work its way to the Transit Museum's collection? (We know the "See-Tee-Yay" waited until a few years after they were retagged as Flxible Metro B's for them to order such buses.) |

W.B.:
Given that the GRUMMAN (aka "Borough Bomber") had to have been the BIGGEST "bomb" to hit "Noo Yawk's" streets, bus-wise, it, again, is telling us just how QUICKLY time has marched on.
To be honest, though, I'd STILL choose a ride on a GRUMMAN over a "BINO" anyday...............

This one's for you......
I am sure this was touched upon quite aways back elsewhere, but.........
If I am not mistaken, isn't there now a preserved RTS in the Museum Bus Fleet?
What number?
What route did it last operate on, and what depot was it last based out of?
As always, appreciate input........

What I see, they have the very "foist" "Tee-Yay" "Are-Tee-Ess" bus, #1201, which would have originally seen "soivice" on the B17 in Brooklyn. Also in their collection is a 1993 "Tee-Em-See" "Torpedo," originally built for Queens Surface, later transferred to Jamaica Buses - and bearing old-style mylar roll signs on the front. "Borough Bomber" bus #236 is also part of the collection. They also have one of the Canadian "Gee-Em" Classic buses, originally purchased by Liberty Lines. You can see the rest:

W.B.:
Appreciate the link (and the info); thanks!
QUITE refreshing to learn that there are TWO "Are-Tee-Es"/"Torpedoes" in the collection (I would have thought that one of the CNG versions might have been "presoived" as a "curiosity")
I STILL lament that NOT ONE of those distinctive "FAKL"/"Soiface" buses "with the sign that sticks out in the front" was spared the torch.............
