SEE PREVIOUS POST)

Also......

I have in my collection a 1966 SIRT tt (Telephone: GIbraltar 7-1220)

During the weekdays, there were, indeed, quite a few trips (westbound) that then terminated at Great Kills (the one-way fare from St. George to Tottenville-35 cents!)Wink

"RIDE THE RAPID" is highlighted on the front; how well Your's Truly recalls the overhead electric sign at the head of the stairs leading down to the SIRT concourse proclaiming the SAME message!) Wink

It's now all so long ago, now (sure glad I've many great memories! Wink

Thanks for this info; so....some trains DO still terminate at Great Kills.

I know that, during the last several years that the remaining (and overtaxed!) "ME-1s" were still running, certain westbound PM trains would run to Great Kills, switch ends, and deadhead back to St. George, to pick up another load of ferry commuters.

Remember, after the '62 fire at the Clifton shops, the fleet was reduced to but 45 cars......and NO SPARES.

Small wonder that, during off-hours, the trains were but two cars in length; this indeed allowed a portion of the fleet to "rest up" for the next rush hour.

BTW:

How did your excursion to the "Isle of Staten" go today?

What did you ride (SIR and ferry-wise)?

Any interesting sights?

I was unable to go, as I have a patch on my chest to monitor my heart for the next nearly 2 weeks (I had it put in Thursday, and I take it off and mail it two weeks' hence), and I limit my outdoor activity as I fear the sweat might take that patch off, and I'm doing my d***est to ensure it stays on for the duration.

W.B.:

Perhaps a "GOH" might have been more beneficial? Wink

All kidding aside, I think you were wise NOT to make that excursion today to the "Isle of Staten", even though it is refreshingly 20 degrees cooler than yesterday! Very Happy

In the meantime, just take things SLOW and EASY, and cast your cares aside, a la "Mr. Jan-OH!" Wink

From current aerial views I've seen online, I can see that the St. George terminal area has seen many changes in the many years since Your's Truly last visited (1998)

I could see that the ferry layup area has been virtually re-configured from what I remember (I STILL had no problem finding the location of the old 68th Street slips)

No trace at all of the B&O yards or piers (I have several photos I took back in 1985, of a partially-collapsed B&O float bridge)

As a kid, I remember Mom and I watching those snorting first-generation switchers shuffling the classic 40-foot boxcars around the yard (the B&O tugs were ESPECIALLY smart-looking!)

What amazes me that the upper loading aprons are still the SAME ones that Mom and I once crossed over so many times when I was growing up, not to mention how many times I did so as an adult!

I also remember the long-ago days when FDNY Marine Company No. 9 had a boat stationed in one of the old 69th Street slips.

So many memories..........

Time for a commuter "aloit"..........

Don't forget that this "Toisday" might mean an "El-Eye-Double-Are" strike, in no agreement is reached....... Sad

Just "hoid" on 1010 WINS........

The unions representing the "El-Eye-Double-Are" are now appealing to Washington, to request federal intervention, as the threat of a "Toisday" strike looms nearer.

Without a doubt, the next few days are going to be QUITE interesting, for certain...........

UPDATE..............

Just had 1010 WINS on, and heard that there will be NO "El-Eye-Double-Are" strike come "Toisday"......now, over 300,000 "Dashing Dans" can breath a collective sigh of relief., and those silvery "M-7s" and "M-9s" will be on the job, as usual...... Wink
