There have been several examples of highway vehicles being modified for use on railroads, but have you ever heard of the opposite? I haven't.... Wink

traildriver:

Make that TWO of us; I, also, have never heard of a railbus being rebuilt for road/highway use.

Interestingly, a few weeks ago, there were a few pics (on another New York-area transit forum) a few 1960s-era photos of a square-window Old Look that had been converted into an "inspection car" for the subways.

As the front end was later greatly modified, it was really a "side view" look that revealed that this was oce a transit coach.

Many, many years ago (in an issue of either RMC or MR) some imaginative fellow built this AWESOME HO model from scratch of a SCENICRUISER RAILBUS!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked

If I am recalling correctly, it even won a prize at an NMRA convention! Very Happy

(dare I go one step further, and picture this as an ELECTRIC "railbus", using a pantograph (or dual poles), and zipping along a reserved high-speed ROW between cities??) Shocked

Always great fun to DREAM, no matter how farfetched it might be! Wink

Thinking more of my "fantasy" Budd RDC inspired bus...

First off, they would have to narrow it down from 10 feet wide, to 8 feet (to 8.5 feet, nowadays), then they would have to shorten it from 85 feet down to maybe 65 feet or so, and lower it from 14' 7" to max, 13 feet...

They could probably make do with a single engine, and would not need a double end cab and vestibule.

If I had photoshop or AI capabilities, I would try my hand at designing one... Very Happy

With your talent and scope, I am SURE that you'd come up with one AWESOME-looking "BUDD" railbus!!! Very Happy

One night, a few years back, I DID have this WILD dream of two PSNJ Old Look suburbans (articulated truck between the two back-to-back units!) sporting PCC-type wheels and skirting, clattering along a private ROW adjacent to the main drag inhere in town! Shocked

Oh, and Sidney Poitier himself (in full PSNJ uniform!) was at the helm of this eye-catching unit, waving a cheery greeting as he sped by! Wink Wink

Recall, also, the 1934 BMT experimental articulated "Zephyr" rapid transit trainset! Wink

TOTALLY AGREE! Very Happy

And, back in the 1930s, hundreds of cast-iron and slush-cast toy replicas of these massive and impressive buses were being manufactured; even the SMALLEST of these now command VERY hefty prices, indeed! Shocked

I VERY MUCH doubt that I'll ever get even ONE of these beautiful old toy buses in my collection........ Sad

It's pretty obvious that the coaches of GM's famed and futuristic "AEROTRAIN" MORE than hint at the design and styling of GM's intercity buses of that era......... Wink

Pre-dating the iconic SCENICRUISER, this sleek and distinctive SCANIA indeed hinted at what the future held........

Here we have two VERY fanciful (and QUITE futuristic) renditions of what postwar GREYHOUND buses might have looked like, had they gotten off the drawing board..........

The top version was built as the GX-1 "Highway Traveller", albeit a bit shorter, with only a single rear axle. It featured styling by Raymond Loewy.

I found this interesting video, I believe produced in Brazil, with some great views of the prototype in action, as well as some neet illustrations of the layout. Just forgive the weird pronunciations of Greyhound and other names by the narrator. Smile

traildriver:

Appreciate the link....thank you!

If I am not mistaken, the only "experimental" coach that operated in (regular) revenue service by GREYHOUND was the "Golden Chariot".

It also would have been most interesting to see what later GREYHOUND buses might have looked like (built by GM) had the company not gotten out of the intercity coach business.

Would they have continued to (for a time) "update" the "Buffalo"?

Or, might they have looked towards MCI and PREVOST for new design inspiration?

I have often, I will admit, thought about GREYHOUND operating VanHools............... Wink
