The Sandy Hook Pilots, are highly skilled, and coveted positions, that take experienced licensed captains, and then require a seven year apprenticeship, before being considered a fully qualified harbor pilot.
Every large cruise ship and freighter are required to have one come aboard to enter the harbor.

After two towers were struck by ships, I guess the Coast Guard determined that with modern navaids, having a fixed tower was no longer needed.

The Ambrose Light, marked the "start/finish line" which ended at Bishop Rock, England, for the "Blue Riband" transatlantic speed record, still held by the SS United States since 1952....3 days and 10 hours and 40 minutes

The Hales Trophy, for the winner, is on display at the US Merchant Marine Academy Museum in Great Neck, NY.

If I were wealthy enough to afford one of those condo's, I wouldn't.

I would rather own my own ocean going yacht, and go where and when I wished. The owner's on
the World have a homeowner's association, which has meetings and votes each year on the itineraries, and if the majority choose what you don't care for, too bad. You can go, or get off the ship for the duration, or rent out your condo, or of course, sell it...

Good posts (and comments) all! Wink

Speaking of "glorified houseboats", I only wish I had the $$$$$$$ to purchase the SI FERRY''s "PVT. JOHN F. KENNEDY" when she was retired.......man, what I could have done with that classic ferry, one that I knew quite well for 60 years!) Wink

NYO--
Perhaps you are mixing up the names? JFK was in the Navy, not a PVT. Wink

There was the retired PVT Joseph F Merrell...

MY last ride on the JFK was in 2021, where I rode my bike from Fresh Meadows in Queens, all the way to Whitehall Street, where I took it aboard on the lower level former auto deck for a round trip ride to St. George.
I loved the sound of the big EMD 2 stroke diesels spooling up to full power... Very Happy

You are correct; I ALWAYS make this error, despite being a SI Ferry "historian" for decades! Rolling Eyes

Back in the 70s, I made a cassette tape recording the sounds of different SI boats (including the "Kennedy"!); those distinctive engine noises (men in the engine room had to wear ear protection from all that screaming from the engines!) was so very reminiscent of the Erie-Lackawanna's "LACKAWANNA", nicknamed "Whining Willy" by crew and commuters, due to the high-pitched whining of her engines.

Those sounds STILL haunt my memory today! Very Happy

When this stalwart little lighthouse was first lit (1883), the SI Ferry fleet was still all-SIDEWHEELER! Shocked

Think of this landmark lighthouse witnessing the passages of EVERY CLASS of SI Ferry from 1994 until today....if only this old beacon could speak! Wink

(think also, of all the classic liners that passed by, for well over a century!)

Mention must be made of the famed "maritime gateway to New York".......

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Narrows

Think of the lengthy pedigree of the great "ocean greyhounds" that once sailed through here, representing the proud steamship companies of many decades ago......not to mention the great freighters (later the monolithic container ships), hulking tankers.....and, of course, until late 1964, the familiar green double-enders of the 69th Street Ferry, shuttling between St. George and Brooklyn........
