I still recall the distinctive "Jersey Cruiser"-type destination signs of the earliest "En-Jay-Tee" MCIs; these were the buses where the front sign was located in a swept-upward "pompadour", that reminded me of the "pompadour" air scoop seen on many ACF-BRILL "suboibans", 60-odd years ago..........

I am not sure, but I think you might be right.
It was strange, indeed, back in the later 80s, seeing these big "Jersey Hounds" running on "suboiban" routes, long the domain of the ever-present "Gee-Em" Old Looks and Fishbowls.
Hard to believe that several generations of "Em-See-Eyes" have been serving "En-Jay-Tee".........time flies......

I MIGHT have asked this quite awhile back......
What (in your opinion) was the deciding factor in the retiremnent of the "Are-Tee-See" by the MTA?
Was it a question of parts availability?
Overall fleet age?
Political pressure?
I STILL miss these now-classics; cannot believe how long they are gone from my area now.........

The "parts" part . . . on that last ride, the bus I rode was actually built by Nova, but had a TMC nameplate put on. |

I often wonder why "En-Jay-Tee" disposed of their RTS fleet as early as they did; IMHO, they were not around all THAT long, before being replaced by NABI shoeboxes/milk cartons.
Remember, NJT did not roster ANY of the RTS until the late 1990s; these were NOVA coaches.

The other day, while walking down Broadway between 122d and 72d Streets, I saw an old "Are-Tee-Ess" dressed up for the purpose of selling OMNY cards, on (I.I.N.M.) 79th and Broadway. Looked inside, didn't see any nameplate in terms of who manufactured it. And I thought, these buses once ruled the streets of the five boroughs. |

Too bad you didn't get a pic of that lld veteran!
Wondering now what was its original fleet number?
I had NO IDEA that I would miss the RTS as much as I did, when they "foist" disappeared, several years ago.....I think that, as much as we liked them, too many of us took these now-iconic classics for granted......

"Poisanally", Your's Truly does not know why tokens had to be phased out at all; WHY everything today has to be all ELECTRONIC, HIGH-TECH, and COMPLICATED!!  (PATH phased out tokens way back in 1971)
WHAT was so COMPLEX about taking a TOKEN out of your pocket, dropping your token into a turnstile slot, "CLUNKING" your way through, and, there you were!
Or, simply dropping your token into the fare box aboard a bus?
Ironically, the last mode of "transit" in "Noo Yawk" to use tokens was the Roosevelt Island Tram.
Thankfully, Your's truly retired not all that long after tokens were replaced with Metrocards (I STILL have the monthly PATH card I last used on the morning of 9/11, entering "the tubes" in Hoboken)
