W.B.:
Thanks for this info; I must be TOTALLY honest and admit that I had never heard of this company (I'm guessing charters only?)
The other thing that has long puzzled me is WHY this photo of an ex-DE CAMP Old Look was included in the "New York City Transit" photo collection?

SOMERSET's Old Looks were among the most handsome on the road; this photo of one of these smart-looking buses dates to 1976......
As I had stated earlier, I recall, very early in the 1980s, seeing SOMERSET Old Looks at the "Port-of-Authority", as well as the Lincoln Tunnel.
These buses would have been the last Old Looks still serving the PABT..........

Back in 1976, we see an Old Look "suboiban" of "ENGLEWOOD BUS COMPANY" working a charter (note the "DE CAMP" Buffalo just behind)
Also, note the school flashers; through the 70s, these big lights were common sights on many transit buses.........

With those add-ons to those lights, they looked almost like quotation marks! |

I MUST agree!
Back in my day, seeing transit buses assigned to "school duty", sporting those flashers, were as commonplace as cracks in the sidewalk.
PSNJ/TNJ was quite into "school charter" runs; after the youngsters were dropped off at school in the AM, the bus(buses) went into regular "revenue" service, until they returned to school duty in the later afternoon........

Hoboken Terminal, 1972.
PSNJ's 4509s were the backbone of the #16 and #17 one block up from us on Summit Avenue, just up the block from us in Union City.
Mom and I rode both lines often for years, until we moved to West Orange in 1971.........

Date this one to 1976; note the ad cards for the long-defunct "FREEHOLD RACEWAY" and "RADIO JIT", the latter being quite commonplace on "AVENUE B's" rolling relics..........''

"RadioJIT" is also defunct, now. It was also mentioned on the 11 P.M. NewsCenter4 on WNBC-TV as translating that late newscast into Spanish for listeners to that station. |

W.B.:
I had totally forgotten that "RadioJIT" was no longer; several of my Spanish friends from down on "The Street" were avid listeners, and indeed mourned its passing.
Like here in "Joisey", 50-plus years back, we always listened to "WVNJ" (a great easy listening station, now long gone); I STILL remember seeing TNJ Fishbowls carrying ad cards for "WVN-JOY".
WNEW was another easy listening station I used to also enjoy, eons ago (today, my circa-1975 GE clock radio in the kitchen is never off 1010 WINS.....ain't NOTHING worth listening to, anymore)......

WVNJ-FM is no more, either; since 1983 it's been Top 40 station "Z-100."
And now, when you tune to 1130? Bloomberg Radio.
As for which station I'm glued to, it's the classical station WQXR. |

W.B.:
So much has bitten the dust, inn the span of 50-odd years.
So far as classical music, thankfully, I have a good selection of CDs to choose from (also classic jazz, oldies, Sinatra, Connie Francis, Kingston Trio, etc)
Then, of course, who could EVER forget the classic "station I.D.".......
"SEVENTY-SEVEN! DOUBLE-YOU AYYYYBEEESEEEEE"
Now THAT brings back a LOT of great memories, for my cousins and Your's Truly, way back in the day!
"NYO"
(Interestingly, the "77" was also a DE CAMP route, running into the "Port-of-Authority"! |

Speaking of "DE CAMPs" old "77", check out this timeless scene from 1974, just outside of the bustling "Port-of-Authority".......
