.......at least a brief mention should also be made of the group of SCENICRUISERS (and 4104s) which were shipped over to Korea, and which, for a time, operated for "KOREA GREYHOUND", back in the 1970s...........

Speaking of EAGLES...........

Back in the (80s?) I recall NJT operating EAGLE coaches; I saw these buses often.

I always said I was going to take a ride on of them, but never did.

One thing I DO recall that sticks out in my memory, was that these buses were particularly noisy (at least, that's how they seemed to me)

If memory serves me correctly, the EAGLES did not last long in NJT's fleet (would be interested to learn who bought them, after the days when NJT were over)..........

NJT ordered a custom version of the Model 10 that was dubbed the Model 20. It had a revised front end, where the driver sat about a foot higher than other Eagles, and passenger's would climb 4 steps to reach the platform instead of the normal 3, but then would only turn to climb one more to the floor level, instead of the normal 2. I like that better, for the driver to sit higher. In addition, the front destination sign was huge in comparison to the standard Eagle's. The rear end was also different. The back looked more like a truck, than a bus, with a pair of doors that swung to the side, instead of the normal "tailgate" door....the radiator and fan arrangement were different also...

The only other carrier I saw with them was Suburban Transit. Those were probably owned by NJT and leased to Suburban, as are many other buses in New Jersey fleets.

Just thinking..........

IMHO, both the SCENICRUISER and the EAGLE were the most iconic highway coaches of the 20th century.

Recall, now, that when the SCENICRUISER first debuted, there was much nationwide hoopla surrounding this startling new coach, from both the traveling public and the news media.

It was not long before the SCENICRUISER became "America's bus".

It did not take long for this sleek highway coach to become an integral part of American icons.

Now, several years after the SCENICRUISER arrived, another eye-catching, modern coach, the EAGLE, quickly became the gleaming flagship of CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS.

Now, what I've been pondering over the last few days......

I am now wondering if the EAGLE would have appeared had the SCENICRUISER not been developed?

Was the EAGLE the response from CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS, basically saying, "Hey, we have to come up with our OWN all-new, all-modern, eye-catching coach!"

What I'm saying here, is that, had the SCENICRUISER not been developed, would TRAILWAYS looked to develop the EAGLE, and thus, NOT have to "keep up with the Joneses"?

IMHO, it seemed as though TRAILWAYS saw great potential in designing and building an all-new, modernistic coach that would at least TRY to give the SCENICRUISER a run for its money?

In other words, had the SCENICRUISER never existed, would there have ever been an EAGLE?

Just thinkin'........

Also interesting.........

Even though the SCENICRUISER's production spanned only a few years, the coach's overall appearance remained the same.

However, the later EAGLES indeed presented a noticeable difference to the original 1957 coaches, built by KASSBOHRER..........

Most likely, no. Since Greyhound would not permit GM to sell the Scenicruiser to other companies, Trailways had to find a way to be competitive.

The PD-4901 should have fit that bill, as it was essentially mechanically identical, but lacked the iconic deck and a half design. The interim solution, was the Flxible VistaCruiser, but it was only 35 feet long. M E Moore tried to get them and other builders to copy the Scenicruiser, but most of them declined. C D Beck eventually did, and Queen City Trailways bought some, but it did not prove successful, and there may have been some (not sure) litigation threats from Greyhound over their obvious copying.

So M E Moore went to Europe, and found a willing participant in Kassbohrer Setra.

Considering the Eagle production spanned about 40 years, compared to 3 years, that should come as no surprise... Wink

Traildriver:

Good responses, all! Wink

I STILL regret, many years ago, NOT taking at least ONE trip aboard an NJT "Eagle"; yes, I saw them quite frequently, and, yes, I HAD planned to "go for a jaunt" aboard one of these handsome coaches, but, alas, somehow, I never got around to it. Sad

Well, if nothing else, I DO have the memories! Wink
