NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629 wrote: | GREYHOUND "commuters"..........
It is interesting to think about those individuals might have ridden GREYHOUND's through routes as a means of commuting to and from a daily job, in certain areas of the country.
Though, of course, GREYHOUND did have an extensive commuter operation in the San Francisco area, decades ago, you wonder at those who might have traveled on a "through route", to reach a job in a city that might have been an hour or so distant from their home.
I've also read that, while although AMTRAK was, and never will be, an agency to offer commuter service, that does not mean that some do not use their trains for commutation purposes........

Probably the last 'commuter' operation ran by Greyhound Lines, was the one between New York City, and "Exit Four", Mount Laurel, NJ.
They inherited this operation when they acquired Continental Trailways, in 1987. This was formerly run by Safeway Trails, who in turn inherited it from their acquisition of the Quaker City Bus Company in the 1950's.
It all started with the opening of the New Jersey Turnpike, reducing the bus running time between Philadelphia and New York to just two hours. It quickly led to real estate development to each Turnpike Interchange. Quaker City stopped at nearby Maple Shade, for many years at the Circle Diner, where NJ38 and NJ73 intersected. The diner parking lot was soon overrun by park and ride commuter's, and Safeway built a new 4 bay depot, and large park and ride lot behind the new Holiday Inn, at Exit 4. For many years it was known as Moorestown, but later was changed to Mount Laurel.
The service was so popular, they had to expand the size of the parking lot.
Service was half hourly from early morning until midnight, with a few 'owl' runs all night. During the peak commute hours, service was every 15 minutes!
Safeway also stopped some New York to Baltimore and Washington trips there, some of which ran thru to points as far as Florida and Texas.
In addition, American Buslines division, also stopped there, with their thru coast to coast schedules that operated between New York and Philly, enroute. |
