Mention must be made in this discussion of Great Britain's legendary "BRIGHTON BELLE", once hailed as "The World's Only All-Electric Pullman Train".
This fascinating train, indeed, also has a most fascinating history...........

E-L sleepers (and diners) serviced at Hoboken...........
Through the 1960s, E-L's sleepers and diners were cleaned, serviced, and re-stocked between runs.
Before the E-L began wiping the slate clean of still more through trains, a familiar sight at the Hoboken terminal (one I clearly remember) was seeing PULLMAN-owned trucks pulling up to cars spotted just outside the terminal's trainsheds (south side of terminal), being restocked.
Despite the cost-cutting and the abandonments, right until the very end of through service in 1970, the E-L still provided excellent passenger service, and their diners were still well-known for their excellent cuisine and attentive staff.
Alas, it was all for naught.............

Further:
Interesting to known that several E-L sleepers were sold to the IC and repainted (though STILL carrying DL&W identification marks!) and were used on the the IC's crack "CITY OF MIAMI" for several years.
Sister car "TOBYHANNA" was used for several years as a Chicago-Mobile sleeper on L&N's "HUMMINGBIRD"...........

Agreed!
During the final months before Amtrak's startup would be the end for many trains, or even entire routes, I made an epic effort to ride as many as time and budget would allow. I made a trip on E_L's "Lake Cities" from Chicago's Dearborn Station to Hoboken, in December of 1969.
My budget only allowed coach travel, but I did enjoy their dining car... |
