In Frank Rowsome Jr's long out of print "TROLLEY CAR TREASURY", in the chapter "THE ANIMAL RAILWAY", there is an illustration from 1872, showing a large group of men hauling a New York horsecar, during the "Great Epizootic".

The car is lettered:

"GRAND-VESTRY-&-DESBROSSES STs"

"GRAND ST.-CROSSTOWN"

Further......

After FACCo motorized in 1907/1908, they, of course, now had to employ mechanics, which, of course, were not needed for omnibus operations.

I also wonder if the omnibus "drivers" were then trained to drive the new motor buses, or if the company instead "outsourced", and hired new men to operate the new motorized buses.

Also, the care, feeding, and grooming of a large number of horses had to represent a substantial cash outlay, during the omnibus era.........

About as much as New York Railways and, later, TARS streetcar operators had to be retrained to "brive a dus" when their systems were "bustituted," along with hiring new people to do so.

But the issue of horse care sank FACCo's predecessor company in the 1890's, if you looked at the history of surface transportation along this tony "aven-yew."

But I think we'll all agree, FACCo's history between its 1907-08 motorization and their 1920's acquisition by "Shik-aga's" Omnibus Corp. was colorful to say the least not only in the buses they operated, but also those they made (after the '20's, with very few exceptions, they'd be first "Yellow," then "Gee-Em," all the way).

At one time, not only omnibuses and streetcars were hauled by horses in Manhattan, but, also, the early trains of the New York & Harlem Railroad were also pulled by "Old Dobbin", on the streets of Gotham.......

(this is a very interesting historical page)

That's just one more example of how ironic it is that today's M1 - descended wholly from the south-of-42d Street part of that first New York and Harlem horse-drawn streetcar route - on its S/B path, mimics the old FACCo #1 (descended from its predecessor company's first horse-drawn omnibus route) between 135th and 8th Streets in going all the way along Fifth.

So "Old Dobbin" had roles in both #1's, very early on.

W.B.:

Omnibuses in "Noo Yawk" even inspired toys; I recall, several decates ago, seeing a really nice-looking tin/metal toy omnibus on display at the Museum Of The City of New York.

Interestingly, most folks think STREETCARS came before BUSES, but, in truth, it was the BUS (albeit horse-drawn) that arrived on the scene "foist", prior to ANY sort of "streetcar".

DE CAMP, interestingly enough, had its ancient roots in omnibuses/'stages", operating from The Oranges to Newark...........
