W.B.:

Good points, all.

As all the current "Em-tee-Yay" bus fleet looks all alike to me, were the "Are-Tee-Es" replaced with buses of ONE builder, OR, were they replaced by buses of different manufacturers?

In any event, NOT A ONE of these new "BINOs" will EVER last as long as the rugged, dependable, now-iconic "Are-Tee-Es"..........

Basically, Orion, Nova Bus (the last "Are-Tee-Ess" manufacturer) and New Flyer. In short, more than one builder. Express buses are made by MCI and Prevost (as in, the silent film star Marie Prevost who was immortalized in a Nick Lowe song).

Regarding the collection of roller curtains front destination sign batwings and small side route signs.

All Manhattan based MaBSTOA buses with batwings and side route curtains had the readings for the Manhattan routes only.

All Bronx based MaBSTOA buses with batwings and side route route curtains had readings for the Bronx routes only

However the front roller curtains only had the readings for the specific route depot assignments.

A total 9 MaBSTOA depots existed in 1966. Seven in Manhattan and 2 in the Bronx.

Therefore your collection would have 2 batwings 2 side route signs and nine different depot signs.

Manhattan based NYCTA buses only had one batwing side route sign and one destination sign roller. For the routes operating out of 126th Street.

Likewise for Staten Island.

Queens based NYCTA buses would have a total of nine different roller curtains. The batwing curtains had destination readings like the front so each depots batwing were only for the routes operating out of those depots.

Brooklyn based NYCTA buses would have a total of fifteen different roller curtains for the same reason as in Queens.

A total of 10 NYCTA depots existed in 1966. One in Manhattan 1 in Staten Island 3 in Queens and 5 in Brooklyn.

So if you were lucky enough to have all of the roller curtains
you would have a total of 12 batwings 12 side route signs and 18 front destination sign curtains.

Didn't MaBSTOA actually have four batwings and four side signs? Because the Bronx depots had so many routes that they had to divvy them up accordingly (i.e. by 3 - two actually in the Bronx, one in way upper Manhattan). It wasn't like in Manhattan where all routes could fit on one batwing and one side sign. (I know Kingsbridge depot was technically in Manhattan, but the routes assigned there were Bronx.)

I know that, when the first MaBSTOA Fishbowls (3301-3555) arrived in 1963, the #4 Fifth Avenue-Fort Washington route was still out of Kingsbridge as it had been since that agency was established the year before. That's why, of the 1963 front roll signs created (which format differed wildly from what would come in later years), after the #4 was reassigned to 132nd Street that fall, that route was an insert that looked hand-painted compared to the other routes that were formatted by Transign.

Fellows:

THANK YOU for posting this fascinating, interesting, and thoroughly detailed roller curtain information! Wink

LOVE getting "in depth" with anything connected to the roller curtains of old!

GREAT WORK, as always! Wink

These might have been touched upon earlier, far back in this topic, but..........

When the "stoa" era began in 1962, were any routes extended beyond their northern terminals?

Also, were any cut back to a new terminal? (or partially rerouted?)

What ex-"Soiface" line(s) offered the best connection to the subway?

As always, appreciate info.......

Also...........

How far from the Westchester border did "Soiface"/"stoa" buses end their routes?

We know that TARS cars operated in lower Westchester until the early 1950s......

To answer these questions please see the attached maps.

Because of their original size I was only able to scan certain portions.

First group is from Westchester under Westchester Street Transportation operation.
