The Old Look Suburbans certainly were dignified looking buses!

In the years just after WW2, prior to the introduction of the Old Look suburban models, many companies that operated suburban services (and who also wanted to buy from GM) either purchased single-door transits (w/standee windows), or (if passengers requested overhead parcel racks) single-door transits with no standee windows*..........

*(WHITE 798s also were available as transits (w/rear doors) or suburbans (with a single door); well into the 1960s, such buses were still commonplace in northern New Jersey)

Here we have a beautifully restored WHITE 798; the bus is painted for RED & TAN, a long lived (now-defunct) northern New Jersey suburban company.

At least through 1966, 798s were common in my area; those operated by NHBL ("NORTH HUDSON BOULEVARD LINES") were all transit models, with rear exit doors.

Those rostered by "INTER-CITY" (aka "The Brown Bus With The Orange Band") were all single-door suburbans, and looked QUITE stylish in their handsome paint! Wink

Sad that you never got to experience WHITES as I did, growing up.

Back in the 1990s, the old "BUS WORLD" magazine did an excellent feature on the WHITES (798s and the newer 1150s) that were still running in Scranton in the early 1970s (interestingly, they were replaced by ex-PSNJ Old Looks! Shocked

The CTA operated a large number of ex-CSL 798s through at least the mid-1960s.

These buses LOOKED tough and SOUNDED tough.......like the Old Looks, it took a LOT to cause them any serious damage.........they were BUILT TO LAST, for sure! Wink

Yep, I'll regret never having been able to ride a White or a number of other notable old buses!

In this 1982 scene, the electronic sign on the GRUMMAN in the foreground seems to be experiencing a "glitch: of sorts; note that the Flex New Look ("Dangerfield") bringing up the rear is one of those buses with no standee windows...........

It was about late 1966/1967 when I couls see a distinct "transition" taking place, regarding the buses in my area.

Gradually, but all to quickly for me, I began to see the oldest buses begin to disappear; these included the square-window Old Looks, the WHITES, MACKS, and whatever other non-GM buses which were still running.

By 1970, all the buses were GM (Old Looks and Fishbowls)

Today, the last Old Looks in my area have now been gone nearly 40 years, while the last Fishbowls disappeared in 1998. Sad

How grateful I am that I SAW and RODE as many as the classics as I did, as a lad, 60-something year ago!! Wink
