W.B.:

Again, greatly appreciate your always-detailed historical input! Wink

As I have lamented elsewhere, I truly feel a sense of loss with the "Em-Tee-Yay" no longer officially using any references whatsoever to "stoa".

Look at that classic "Jetson-esque" new insignia, the stylish "OA" of the 60s; those handsome medallions weren't even around a decade before the humdrum, bland "M" replaced them............

Those "transitions" and "contrasts" weren't just in what logos were used on the front cover for the "batwings." Both buses originally had the 'OA' logo.

I noticed the ones you selected with 'OA' were the 1965-66 set (the last to be ordered WITHOUT A/C) and the 'M' buses were from the 1966-67 batch WITH A/C. Interesting way to highlight it.

Makes you wonder WHY" the "Em-Tee-Yay" could not allow the old "OA" medallions to remain in place (even updated versions); after all, these WERE "stoa" buses running on "stoa" routes.........

Same reasons why they wouldn't allow the "buses with the sign that sticks out in front" to continue in "soivice" past 1970. William Ronan and "Em-Tee-Yay" management were all "out with the old, in with the new." Even in terms of what emblem was on the buses. And this applied, too, to the A/C batwings the 'Tee-Yay' ran, with the red/blue 'ta' logo likewise supplanted by 'M'.

If the dreaded "Ronan" scheme was bad enough on the SMEE fleet, it was downright GODAWFUL on the repainted "Arnines" Razz

Thank heavens the "Steels" had already been retired by this stage of the game..........

There were actually two "Ronan" schemes: those that were thrown on the "SMEE" cars (and some Arnines) - and the two-tone blue introduced in March 1972 on the new T6H-5309A and 5310A buses. Let's just say that it's fortunate the last remaining "Kramdens' " retirement forestalled those buses from getting that color scheme.

W.B:

Agreed 100%.

I SHUDDER to think of a "Kramden" or a "Patton" wearing that dreaded paint scheme.....(!!) Shocked Razz

At least the blue stripes "jazzed up" the otherwise plain "Em-1s" ("El-Eye-Double-Are") and newer subway cars up to and including the "Fordy-Sixes".

Don't get me started on the dread "dip" that adorned the remaining Fishbowls and "Dangerfields", in their twilight years............ Razz

In October of 1956, timeless scenes such as this in Brooklyn disappeared forever, down the echoing halls of time............ Sad

Weird...........

On this day in 1956, the last Brooklyn streetcars ran.

And, on that SAME DAY, in 2024, all the world now knows that the descendents of "Dem Bums" from Brooklyn, are now the "Woild Series" champs.

I guess the old saying is true, after all:

"Revenge is a dish best served cold"............... Wink

Odds were that these "old-tyme" Brooklyn trolley men were indeed Dodgers' fans..... Wink

November, 1956.............

"Kramdens" and "Pattons" ruled the streets of Brooklyn, and B&QT trolleybuses were also still on the job, carrying on the grand old Brooklyn tradition of electric street transport.

And, of course, the "Moit" was still operating ancient open-platform "BU" convertibles (too, "Dem Bums" would be playing one more season at Ebbets Field, prior to their move out west to "El-Ay").......

Paying tribute to another proud, long-gone era in Brooklyn............

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn_Navy_Yard (a number of historical photos are also on this page)

I know that, back in the heyday of the BNY, many "woikers" rode the clattering wooden trains of "da Moit" to and from their jobs.

Curious, also, as to what streetcar/bus routes also might have been used by shipyard "woikers".

Just received my copy of "THE BROOKLYN NAVY YARD" ("Images Of America" series), by Thomas F. Berner; I strongly recommend to anyone interested in Brooklyn's proud maritime/industrial past to purchase a copy of this book......the photos alone are priceless.

Who today recalls that tragic day in 1960, when the "USS CONSTELLATION", then being outfitted at BNY, caught fire, and burned for 12 hours; sadly, fifty workers were killed, and 150 injured.

Interestingly, the amphibious transport "USS DULUTH" had the distincyion of being the last vessel to be launched at the yard......

"........and so it is gone. What was once a proud symbol of strength and power of democracy was sold to the City to serve as an idustrial park....."

'.......a modest amount of civilian ship repair is conducted there today, but the City turned its back on the sea many years ago....."

"......part of the old yard is now used for the storage of city-owned vehicles; other parts of the former shipyard are now used for light industry......."

No wonder so many Brooklynites, so many decades before, once thought of their borough as being "the center of the world".

Indeed, that was many decades ago.

Recall, also, that, originally the US NAVY objected to the building of the VZ Bridge.........
