Since they had an opening, that looked like an invite to "graffiti artists" to scrawl their defacements on the bus fronts, as was seen on some 1972 films. Also, didn't it look like the depot had some fire in that area as shown down the middle?

EXCELLENT photo!!!!!
Man, was that lot ever DIRTY, even for "Noo Yawk"!
Those classic, once-so-commonplace Checker cabs date this photo as much as the Fishbowls!
Ahhh, yes, to go back to the days when BUSES still looked like BUSES, instead of milk cartoons and caterpillars..........
(That whole area looks like a set from the "THE WIZ"!!)

And to think it had once been the depot of Fifth Avenue Coach which was the "hoity-toity" of the bus companies, and which charged a premium (10 cents) for people to go to and from tony "Fifth Aven-yew." But if based on that pic, you'd think you were looking at an old "Soiface" depot.

W.B.:
Indeed, the old FACCo was of the undisputed "upper echelon", the "upper crust" of "Noo Yawk" transit operations.
That the company charged a 10 cent fare (instead of the flat 5 cents paid elsewhere) alone told folks that this was indeed a bus operation NOT for the "hoi polloi"!
I've read quite a number of books over the years, where "riding atop of a 5th Avenue bus" was indeed to feel as though you were the king of the world (of course, it was NOT the same when folks rode the enclosed upper decks of the Queen Mary-types, unlike the old open-top "Blunderbus" types.........

Having seen the end from Broadway with the "neo-el"* section of the IRT Broadway line hovering above, that pic does look like the back end, no? But given the presence of "Dangerfields" plus the one "Torpedo," looks like this was before this incarnation of the depot was demolished and a new depot erected in its place.
* Neo-el = not an "original" el, but built as part of the subway in certain sections where the terrain was not conducive to it being underground.

REAL BUSES and NOT "BINOs" ("Buses In Name Only")!
Those big and bold batwings (along with their now-dated ads!) are today as nostalgic as the Fishbowls themselves.....how we all took suxh classic buses for granted, once upon a time.....GREAT PHOTO!!
