Broadway & 216th Street, 1972.......

As was commonplace in so many American cities after streetcars had been replaced by buses, the old carbarns became bus garages; the garage (former carbarn) seen here was once "home base" for TARS streetcars.............

Quoting myself here................
Just curious; what "stoa" routes were based out of the old TARS carbarn, see in the 1972 photo I posted yesterday evening?
Also, when did the MTA close it? (I would guess it was demolished many years ago.......

Here have Fishbowl #8007 enjoying a brief (and well-deserved) respite between daily chores at the Castleton garage in 1978; note also the old-style light fixtures still in use, as well as the old two-aspect "signal".
Too, note that #8007's batwings are obviously being serviced........

"Foither".......
As I had mentioned earlier, am curious at to when the "Em-Tee-Yay" closed the old garage up in "da Bronx", which had been TARS Kingsbridge car house (see photo I posted); what replaced this facility; it indeed was a landmark that should still be standing today.
What "Soiface"/"stoa" routes were based out of this former carhouse?
Appreciate info.....

In that period . . . ?
For starters, here was where the two orders of "Jetsons" by FACL and for them and (on the second order) ST played out their final years. But as to their routes, as of 1972 . . . ?
- Bx1 - Concourse-138th Street
- Bx2 - Concourse Hub
- Bx3 - Prospect Avenue
- Bx4 - Jerome and Bainbridge Avenues
- Bx10 - Riverdale Avenue
- Bx11 - 170th Street Crosstown
- Bx20 - Bronx and Van Cortlandt Parks
- Bx24 - Bailey Avenue
- Bx34 - 163rd Street Crosstown
- Bx34A - Shuttle
- Bx35 - 167th Stret Crosstown
- Bx37 - Ogden Avenue
- Bx38 - University Avenue
- Bx41 - Webster Avenue-White Plains Road
When the Bx55 was created upon the demise of the "Toid Aven-yah" el in 1973, it was assigned to Kingsbridge.
The old "car barn" was demolished - and a new depot since erected in its place.

W.B.:
Greatly appreciate the info; I had no idea that there were that many routes based out of this garage.
The now-demolished (within the past two years) PSNJ garage in Union City (my old hometown) was NEVER referred to as a "bus garage" by locals; it was ALWAYS "the carbarns", even though the last streetcars departed in 1949.
From my memory, these routes were based there........
#16- EXCHANGE PLACE
#17-HUDSON PL. (HOBOKEN)
#21 WEST NEW YORK
#19-26 UNION CITY
#44-BERGENLINE
#44-PARK AVENUE
#124 (JSQ-HACKENSACK)
#200 PARK-RIDE"
The last two streetcar lines that operated out of this hugefacility were the "SUMMIT" and "UNION CITY" lines; several other car lines were based here through late 1938...............

But . . . was that "Pea-Ess" facility ever referred to as a "bus depot"?
But also . . . if you've noticed in the " 'stoa" photos on nycsubway.org, a lot of those routes I mentioned had "Jetsons" assigned to them in the 1970-73 period.

W.B.:
In all my years of researching "Pee-Es" history, I've only heard the terms "car barn", "car house", or "garage"; I've never heard (or read) of any reference to a PSNJ facility as a "depot".
You mentioned "Jetsons"; though Your's Trulty was quite young at the time, the earliest "Jetsons" I recall were those used on the "#44" routes; by the later 1960s, only the two lines that ran on Summit Avenue (just up the block from us) were still running "Shermans" (4509s); all other lines out of the Union City "carbarns", by that time, were using Fishbowls ("Jetsons" and "Bullets").......

W.B:
THANK YOU for taking the time to list the routes that were once based out of this depot; truthfully, there were more routes assigned there than I previously though!
HAD to be a VERY interesting place to "bus watch" for sure, especially when the venerable "Kramdens" were still on the roster!

"Da Bronx" had all of three depots, as opposed to the seven in Manhattan strewn out (one "Tee-Yay," the rest " 'stoa" - of that, one ex-FACCo, one ex-"Soiface," all the rest ex-NYCO). So natch', each depot would have more routes assigned than in the "tonier" of the five boroughs.
I mentioned what Kingsbridge had once upon a time, and what Coliseum had. Soon I shall get to West Farms . . .

While I have my notes with me, here, in the late 1960's, was what bus routes were stationed at West Farms:
- Bx-21 - Pelham Bay Park
- Bx-25 - Morris-Jerome
- Bx-26 - Boston Road
- Bx-27 - Clason Point
- Bx-28 - Williamsbridge
- Bx-29 - Willis Avenue
- Bx-31 - Southern Boulevard
- Bx-32 - St. Ann's Avenue
- Bx-33 - 138th Street Crosstown
- Bx-40 - Tremont Avenue
- Bx-42 - Westchester Avenue
In sum, it appears West Farms had the least bus routes, Coliseum the most, and Kingsbridge down the middle.
