traildriver/All:

Another fascinating aspect of the bus hobby is that it can be, and is, quite diverse.

Some of us are interested in all buses; others only are interested in the vintage models.

Others in the hobby are very much into the latest models; then, too, there are those of us who really getting into the "nuts-and-bolts" aspect of the bus hobby, reveling in model designations, vehicle widths, and so forth.

Like railroading, the bus/transit hobby is one that is at once diverse and intriguing....not to mention a whole busload of FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

It is up to us to try to keep the hobby going, as best we can, for as long as we can.

This is a rich, diverse hobby with so much to offer to all age groups.......Wink

Well said, NYO--my sentiments, exactly.
It is not only public transportation, either...I am also into 'cars' as in automobiles. Go to your typical owner's club, and it too, seems to be an "old man's club". Younger people in general (again there are exception's), just don't seem that into cars. Many 'Millennial's' don't even have a driver's license..

I'll never forget how much I wanted mine...I made sure I had it on my sixteenth birthday! Cool Smile

traildriver:

Thanks! Wink

I also love classic autos and trucks, not to mention harbor craft (especially ferries and tugs!) ships and boats of all sorts, vintage commercial and military aircraft.

Ditto for the classic airships like the Hindenburg and Graf Zepplin.

Getting back to buses, most non-enthusiasts would think that "most buses are all alike"....WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked

As an example: look at Fishbowls/New Looks; if one really delves into their long and illustrious history, the non-enthusiast would be astounded to learn of all the subtle (and some not too subtle) changes to the "basic" Fishbowl since its introduction in 1959 (Recall the classic and timeless VW "Beetle"!)

I truly feel that the "behind the scenes" aspect of our hobby is ALWAYS quite interesting, and WELL worth researching! Very Happy

Look at the lastest PROTERRA developments; I have seen many photos of these unique vehicles, including one in SEPTA livery.

Here, I feel, is a new era dawning for the bus enthusiast; and, hopefully, it just might be "hi tech" enough to get the younger guys away from their electronic gizmos and doo-dads for a while...... Wink

.......just imagine what the legendary SCENICRUISER might look like today, if it were still in production......(!!) Shocked

Then again, perhaps some things are better left to one's own fertile imagination........ Wink

Reflections...........

Regarding streetcar/electric rail preservationists, with each passing year, there are less and less men walking the earth who once had a "personal" connection to the cars which now reside in museum collections.

The last TARS conduit streetcars in Manhattan ran in 1946; the last B&QT streetcars in 1956.

Any then-adult enthusiast would, today, be well into their 90s, or, sadly, long-since passed on to that big car house in the sky. Sad

This now holds true for bus preservationists.

Each year, these dedicated fellows see their ranks thin out even more; with each passing week, there are fewer and fewer gentlemen alive who would be able to recall the preserved buses when they were still in revenue service.

Like their rail dedicated preservationist counterparts, one day, they will have all passed from the scene.

As with many long-established transportation museums today, seeing their old membership steadily decline and disappear, and little "new blood" coming into the ranks, it is all, sadly, quite sobering........ Sad

Sad..........

More and more, modern LRV's (the hi-tech ancestor of the trolley) resemble nothing more than giant, mutated caterpillars/serpents; some of these are downright frightening.

In Europe and Asia, most modern LRVs indeed more resemble giant insects than any sort of public transit vehicle (in Italy in France, in particular, most modern LRV units are light-years beyond bizarre. Shocked

I've seen five-section articulated buses that look like massive caterpillars from a far-off galaxy. Razz

Years ago, "modern" meant "sleek" and "stylish".

Today, however, "modern" translates into "bizarre" and "hideous".

I simply HATE these crawling, slithering electrified serpents.......Evil or Very Mad

NYO:

I'll second that. About 20 years ago when they first started putting those slanty headlights on cars, a priest friend of mine said they looked like "angry insects." They've only gotten worse since then and even more angry. It was bad enough having them on cars but now they're on trucks, buses, and trains too. Kind of goes along with "modern art." Art used to be something beautiful but most of today's "art" wouldn't even have been considered art back in the day.

The PCC's were so beautiful and the LRV's so ugly and getting uglier. Ugh! Just compare what ran on the City Subway or the Shaker Rapid then compared to what runs now, to name only a few.

The PCC's (like Old Looks and Fishbowls) were TIMELESS.....sleek, modern, and HANDSOME! Very Happy

Those days, sadly, are now long gone....... Razz

This video of the last day of PCC's on the Newark City Subway just popped up on my YouTube feed. How appropriate! Here's the beauty but I'll skip the beast.

cyberider;

At age four, my "foist" trolley ride was aboard one of these ex-TCRT PCCs; I grew up with classic streetcars, and railfanned them extensively, beginning in the 1970s.....what fun! Wink

Today's "Baby Beluga" LRV's leave me cold....they are NOT streetcars; too bad the original PCC's could not have been retained (like the incredible Market Street Railway in San Francisco)

Today's LRV operations In Newark has all the appeal and charm of a can opener......... Razz

Newark really "missed the boat" letting their PCC's go. I bet some of them are now in SF, aren't they?

Cyberider:

The ex-Newark PCC's are now pretty much scattered about, from what I've heard.

A group of them were set aside for a new light rail line in Bayonne (on New York Bay), at the former Military Ocean Terminal, but nothing ever came of it, and the cars grew quite shabby as they sat idle.

I believe the one on the Market Street Railway was not an original Newark car, but one that was repainted into the PS colors of the 1950s and 1950s (I grew up with that classic paint scheme!) Wink

Too bad some organization doesn't buy those cars while they're still salvageable, if they are. Not enough PCC's left to let them sit idle. Yep, the PS livery was attractive both on the PCC's and buses.
