In discussing the reasons as to why rear fleet numbers on RTS's are usually mounted on seperate plates at the very tops of the louvered A/C vents, I have concluded that in any other location the engine bonnet or hatch when opened would block such identification.
My question is this; the RTS hatch opens by pulling it away and then sliding it straight up and the hatches on the GM Old Looks opened in the same manner as the trunk lid on a car.
But, for the life of me I can't remember how the GM New Look hatches worked although I think they were of the trunk lid type (as depicted in the Mack 'CT' photo below).
Unfortunately (or fortunately) I was too busy making a living and didn't pay attention to such things during the 'New Look' era.
Thanks for your input.

Hi Mr. L!
You are quite right.
The large, single piece rear engine compartment door on GM and Flx New Looks was horizontally hinged at the top, and swung upwards to provide engine bay access to maintaners.

Thanks Bob,
Now I have another question that I think we'll need a NABI specialist on;
I notice that the 60 BRT's used by LACMTA (and I suppose anywhere else) make this horrific noise that sounds like a dog barking usually three times in rapid succession, and they appear to do so as the transmission shifts.
Any ideas?
I remember on the GM Old Looks we used to get one loud clunk as the bus went from low to high.
Thanks for any input.

I liked the way the throttle was cut just before the clunk. |

Oddly enough, the "pantograph"type engine door on the RTS (in that it pulled outward and then straight up) was deliberately intended to keep the taillights visible.
When GM modified the A/C pack to square off the coach the engine door became more of a problem for some transit systems
The New Look door, however, hinged outward and swung up, and you then put a pin into the slide to lock it open. However, when the door was open the taillights were no longer visible.
Orion and Flyer solved this by placing a second set of lamps against the inside of the engine door, facing down, so that when the door is open these lamps are visible to the rear. |

The engine door on Chicago's 1989-90 RTS-08s swung out:
