Looking at those photos of the original R-16, it amazes me how the subway trains ran for so many years with “feeble” headlights, which were basically clear lensed marker lights.
It was around 1960 or so, when new trains came with sealed beam headlights, and older trains were retro-fitted with them…

On this day in 1973........

The last trains operated over the last surviving section of the 3rd avenue El in The Bronx.

The last prewar IRT cars ran on the El until 1969, when they were replaced by a group of "R-12s", then the oldest IRT cars in revenue service..............

Further......

Also on this day (1950) the last IRT "Composites" ran in revenue service on the 3rd Avenue El; within 28 days, these ancient cars were replaced by BMT "Q" cars. modified for IRT El service.

The center doors on the "Composites" were added in later years; these cars were retired from subway service in 1916, and therafer ran only on the elevated lines.

Sadly, not one of these unique cars was preserved..........
