Back in 1970, MaBSTOA Old Look #3100, now clearly OOS, patiently awaits scrapping as it contemplates "the good old days" of serving the riding public (note some sort of ticket under the near wiper) while slumbering in the Coliseum Garage yard

In a happier scene from that same year (1970) we see #3100's running mate #2682 ("the bus with the sign that sticks out in the front"!) in service, at 5th Avenue and 34th St.
Time was indeed running out for thee classic buses.......

These buses were (according to "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT SYSTEM: BUS & TROLLEY COACH FLEET", by James Clifford Greller) these were the first "Tee-Yay" purchased to be furnished with pink fiberglass seats.....

The reason having to do with the drive to combat seat vandalism. It's why when the R-26 and R-28 subway cars were built, they too were fitted with fiberglass seats. Refresh my memory, but didn't the 1958-59 FACL and ST Old Looks with the distinctive front sign box also have fiberglass seats at the outset (ditto for the last Macks built for ST in '58 )? |

W.B.:
According to the aforementioned Greller book, the 6000-series MACK C-49's (1956) eventually had their cushioned seats replaced by plastic/fiberglass.
Interestingly, the MACKS that ran in Brooklyn sported green plastic seating, while those assigned to Staten Island routes had pink plastic/fiberglass seats.
Recall, also, that, as the 1960's progressed, the oldest subway cars (those still furnished with rattan (or leather) seat cushions also were re-equipped with fiberglass/plastic seating (NOT at all conducive for a comfortable ride, you may be sure!)

W.B…. Neither the last old looks, with the protruding sign box, nor the fishbowls purchased by Fifth Avenue Coach & Surface Transit came with plastic seats. Likewise, the ten Mack C-49s of 1958 that Surface bought did not have plastic seats. They all had upholstered seats like those in 3100 but not the same ugly combination.
In fact the the C-49, TDH-5106 and the a/c fishbowls had lounge seats after the rear door all the way around to the emergency door. |

MaBSTOA 15:
Here in "Joisey", back in the day, I can recall only a few Old Looks having hard plastic seating; however, despite the fact that most Fishbowls that I remember had upholstered seating, quite a few also had hard plastic seats (these were mostly the "transit" models)
First to come to mind were the "semi suburban" types that were part of the ORANGE & BLACK fleet (these were single-door buses)
NJT was still using these buses well into the 1980's.
These buses had pink plastic seating; a number of the NHBL Fishbowls also had plastic seating.......

Hmm. So FACL/ST weren't of the same mind as the 'Tee-Yay' with respect to bus seating, then. Interesting. |

Merrick & 90th, 1971 (is that a terminal in the background? I can also glimpse an "indy" Fishbowl, in the background, on the left)
Old Look #7105 appears quite of a different era, in this 50-year ol view.
Also, note the row of "Tee-Yay" Fishbowls in the background, all with blanked-off a/c's........

Obviously the 1971 lot within 4300-4499, given the back lights. Which of those would have been #4401 that later was rebuilt as 5227, I ask? |

W.B.:
I am sure this was mentioned elsewhere in our discussions, but which "Tee-Yay"/MaBSTOA buses (GMC/Flex) were the last to be delivered in the old (1960's) green scheme?

On MaBSTOA: 1969-70 Flxible buses 4600-4727
On 'Tee-Yay': 1970-71 GM buses 4300-4499
All buses since the 1968 GM order (8801-8928) had the 'M' insignia up front above the entrance and drivers' windows. |
