All:
In my area of extreme southern Bergen County, NJ (just a mile or so north of the Hudson County border at Nungessers), jitney vans far outnumber the NJT buses on Anderson Avenue, heading for the PABT.
About 2005, NJT decided to (foolishly) cut back the "#22 HILLSIDE" (originally an ACADEMY route, also operated by FranMar, many years back) to Nungessers.
The #159 schedules leave much to be desired; the #751 (former TNJ B-1) operates on Anderson Avenue every two hours, Mondays through Saturdays.
When my folks and I first moved here in late 1974, you had (in addition to the privately owned "#22") TNJ and ORANGE & BLACK.
Today, the vans far outnumber the NJT buses (#159/159R) on Anderson Avenue; on Bergenline Avenue (North Bergen/West New York/Union City) it is more than apparent that the vans are in far greater number than the NJT buses.
With so many of the vans being rattletraps, and many drivers operating without valid licenses (and/or questionable immigration status) it is a wonder (at least to me) why these vans have been allowed to continue operating, further cutting into NJT revenue.
I was forced, in the distant past, to ride a van twice......after those two times, I vowed NEVER again.
I have seen far too many van drivers who clearly are only concerned with beating an NJT bus to a bus stop, in order to grab the waiting passengers, regardless of safety.
If only to go back to the PS/TNJ/ACADEMY era......

It's 1981, and "FRANMAR" Fishbowls are operating on the "#22", which ran from the Fort Lee/Cliffside Park border, to 14th St. in Hoboken (at that time, connections could still be made at 14th St., with the vintage buses of the long-defunct Washington Street line (this was prior to the "#22" being extended down to the PATH terminal)
"Little Marcy's", long gone today, was a store popular with Mom and other ladies in the family; on the left-hand side of the street, "ALESSI's HOBBY SHOP", which I frequented for many years, was located just to the back of the photographer.
This store, sadly, is now long, long gone.
Mom and I used this once-convenient line for many years; my aunt, back then, lived at 79th St. & Bergenline, and would use the "#22" to come up to visit us, through the 1980's.......

Way, way back in the early 1980's (many eons before the "JVI" invasion); ["Jitney Van Invasion"], ex-ORANGE & BLACK Fishbowls were still common, everyday sights along Bergenline Avenue, heading to and from the PABT.
If I only had a dollar for every time I rode one of these classic buses, a few decades back.......

Here (in 1981) an ex-ORANGE & BLACK Fishbowl, PABT-bound, is in the lead, with a FRANMAR #22 (heading for Hoboken) bringing up the rear.......

Ex-ORANGE & BLACK Fishbowl #665*, is seen here heading for the PABT, at Anderson & Aurora (Cliffside Park), on a rainy day in 1983.
I've lived within several blocks of this location for well over 40 years now, so this location is very familiar to Your's Truly.
Anderson Avenue runs due south through Cliffside Park and Fairview; at Nungessers (at the Bergen County/Hudson County border) Anderson Avenue becomes Bergenline Avenue........

It's a bright, sunny day in Union City, and ex-PSNJ/TNJ "X-381" (holding down a "19-26 UNION CITY" line run, is seen about to cross 32nd St., while on Bergenline Avenue.
At that time, the old PS "carbarns", which was located between Bergenline and New York avenues, stretching from 27th to 29th St., was still in use by NJT; it also served streetcars until 1949, and was finally closed in the early 1990's.
DAVIS toy store (established in the 1930's and now long gone) is just glimpsed on the left; on the right, a huge newsstand, opened at all hours, did a tremendous business for decades, also selling comic books, magazines, candy, and cigarettes.
Ahhh, memories.........

There is much nostalgia in this 1981 photo, taken at Nungessers (you are looking Northeast)
The photo is also worthy of note, as an "X"-series Fishbowl is seen running on the "21" (late, the #181); as a general rule, the "Z-300" series Fishbowls ruled this line for many years.
At this location, Anderson Avenue becomes Bergenline Avenue.
I also began commuting on this line (to the Hoboken PATH tubes) beginning in early 1979)
Note the 1950's-era traffic signal at the right, near the roadway leading through North Hudson Park (we locals always called it "Hudson County Park)
Note the old line pole (left side of picture) near the diner; until 1938, this pole supported wires for the "WEST NEW YORK" and "NORTH BERGEN" streetcar lines.
It, also, later supported ASV overhead.
The pole was finally removed in the mid-1990's.
Like many other local routes at that time, the "#21" was still based out of the old Union City "carbarns", near 32nd St.........

Today, NJT operates a truncated "#22 HILLSIDE" (it was cut back to Nungessers about 2005); in earlier years, ACADEMY, M&G, and FRANMAR also operated this line.
Note the different paint schemes used on these M&G Flex New Looks.
*(The top photo is particularly nostalgic to Your's Truly, as he has lived within a five minute-walk of this location since 1974)
When ACADEMY took over the "#22" in the 1980's, a small, illuminated yellow metal sign was affixed to the roof of the buses, on the left front, advertising the fare (I can remember the fare being 45 cents for quite some time).......

Compare this circa-1948 photo (also taken at Bergenline Avenue & 32nd St. in Union City) with the one posted earlier, showing Fishbowl #X-381, on the "#19-26 UNION CITY".
Here we see an elderly PSNJ 2800-series Compromise roof car, heading on its way to the Hoboken Terminal.
Note the DAVIS toy store delivery truck parked on the left.
Back in the 1960's, this area still looked much the same as it did in earlier years......

For many years, ORANGE & BLACK's colorful buses were commonplace sights along Bergenline Avenue, operating on several routes.
The one O&B route that totally bypassed Bergenline Avenue was the rush-hours only "RIVER ROAD EXPRESS", which, as a "closed door express", instead utilized Boulevard East and the "old" River Road.
Today, this line is now NJT's #159R, and, is no longer a true express, but more of a "limited stop" run, as, in place of the old factories and derelict waterfront areas in Weehawken, there are now endless rows of condos, high-rise townhouses, and mini-malls.
River Road, itself, has been totally transformed into a wide, multi-lane highway, totally unrecognizeable from what it was 40 years ago.
40 years ago, TNJ and MANHATTAN LINES buses made stops along Boulevard East, while ORANGE & BLACK buses ran "closed door" all the way into the PABT........
