A few "oddballs" in the TARS fleet.......

*This BRILL-built car was a variant of the single-truck BIRNEY of earlier years; it was a feeble attempt to revive the market for single-truck cars (albeit of a more modern design)
This unusual car (#1701) was to be used as a pilot model to convert cars of earlier vintage in a similar fashion.
The car, however, was quite prone to derailments; the car was then withdrawn from service and stored for many years at the 129th St. car house.
It was scrapped in 1942, as pat of the scrap metal drive for the War..........

It is indeed sobering when one contemplates the fact, that, aside from photos and early home movies, virtually nothing remains of the once-great TARS network, outside of the several preserved cars that currently reside in various museums.
Virtually all physical reminders of the system have vanished; the men who worked the cars and manned the repair shops, have, long ago, passed on to that big car house in the sky.
How valuable these old photos are today; they, indeed, are images of a New York....and, indeed, a world.....that long ago vanished into history.......

Buses replaced streetcars on the 42nd Street Crosstown in November, 1946. Then age nine, I recall the additional stencil paint seen on the X sign of 851. To inform riders about the new bus route numbers, for perhaps a month or two the streetcars carried across the route letter the future bus route number. I think 851 shows M-102. The sign on 1058 has not yet received that stencil. If the new buses did not arrive until November, I wonder whether the convertibles had their sides installed in the meanwhile. Location: 42nd Street looking west at the Hudson River Pier. Above, the Julius Miller West Side Highway was opened in August, 1934. |
