Views of postwar TWINS operating anywhere in New York certainly are not as commonplace as those depicting GMC's.

This circa-early 1950's photos shows a lineup of them on Vanderbilt Avenue (this might have been some sort of church charter).

Look closely at far left; it looks like you can just make out what looks to be the rear of a WHITE.......

NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629,

Those Twins were 1947 Model 44-S's and part of the city's fleet and, as such, would not have been permitted or licensed to do charter work.

However, they might have been on a charity assignment which was permitted.

The furthest bus in the photo that you think may be a White is actually just another Twin (the lower right edge of the right rear window is blocked preventing you from seeing the gentle corner curvature which is much more acute on a White).

Great photo!

NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629,

O. K., now you've given me something I can really sink my teeth into!

In a scene taken in downtown Manhattan sometime between mid 1947 and late 1948, we see fleet number 303 - a 1946 GM Coach Model TD 4506 and one of three likenesses numbered 301 to 303 originally purchased by the East Side Omnibus Corporation of Manhattan, New York (another three numbered 701 to 703 were purchased simultaneously by commonly owned Comprehensive Omnibus Corporation also of Manhattan).

# 303, which maintained its original fleet number and cream over bright red livery, now carries the logo of the City of New York Board of Transportation after its takeover of the two companies in early 1947.

The purchase of these six post war GM buses was out of character for East Side and Comprehensive being devout Mack from their beginnings in the early thirties.

Once the city placed new Mack C-45-DT's on the two company's routes in late 1948, the GM's were sent to join a fleet of TDH 4507's at the Queens Bus Division.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Mr. "L":

Glad you've been enjoying the photos, and, of course, I greatly enjoy the fascinating "insight" you provide for so many of them.....thank you!

Again, your knowledge is most impressive!

"NYO"

BTW:

Have you seen the two photos showing the MACK involved in a serious wreck, which I posted late yesterday?

Any clue as to any particulars on what might have happened?

From my files......

These circa-1948 photos show the horrific damage inflicted upon MACK #1606.

For such a heavy, solidly-built bus to become such a mangled wreck, this accident HAD to be a serious one.

Certainly hope that no lives were lost.......

BEFORE THE ACCIDENT: Here's Mack C-45-GT 1606 in pristine condition just delivered and being inspected at City Hall in 1947 along with it's mates 1601-1628. According to the caption of this photo, the destination signs have not arrived yet, so paper signs were glued until their arrival.

I would think that the driver could have survived this albeit injured, but if passengers were sitting in the right side bench seats, that may be another story.

Frankie:

OUTSTANDING "before" photo.......MANY THANKS for sharing it with us!

Judging by the severe damage to the bus in the wreck photos I posted, one might easily assume a very nasty encounter with either an elevated support column, or a semi.

Again, this HAD to have been a NASTY accident, for that bus to be so seriously mangled......

What strikes me odd about this bus is the unusual push out doors at the rear. It's not very often that you see post-war Macks with this feature. I'm wondering if these were ordered that way or just a retrofit at the garage.

Based on what I read, STS ordered 335 C-45-DT Macks in two orders numbered 1600-1810 and 1900-2024 and one last order of 15 C-47-DT Macks 2025-2039. Was this one renumbered as 3001?

Frankie:

It is amazing how one can spot these otherwise "pedestrian" variants in such old photos, particularly if somone (like yourself) is "in the know".

Though New York was, by and large, a GMC town, the MACKS also more than pulled their own weight, during the years they carried passengers in Gotham.

Though a die-hard "Old Look" fan for over 50 years, I've always had a VERY soft spot in my heart for MACKS.

The very last departed my area of NJ way back in the late 60's......and I STILL miss 'em!
