That's a good looking bus. Now if only they wouldn't have had the habit of painting the bumpers!

JimmiB:

Agreed all the way!

For the life of me, I could never understand just WHY they did!

I STILL remember how those chrome bumpers glittered when a bus was just out of the washers, still dripping!

Still, as you said, it was a GOOD-LOOKING bus, indeed!

Those big TDM's truly were in a class unto themselves!

Mr L.,
I don't think anyone yet answered your question in reference to the driver window bars. I believe those bars were to prevent the unauthorized from reaching inside to switch open the doors.
Later buses, such as NYCTA 4444, a 1971 GM T6H5305A was delivered with modified driver windows as seen in the following photo:
BTW, the 5309's had full size opening driver windows and no bars. I'm not familiar where the door controls were but I wonder if the door control was moved away from the window.

Rich, the ones I used to drive had the full opening driver's window and the door control was right inside the window. Yes, the passengers figured it out. I had several times when I'd go grab a cup of coffee during a layover and come back to find people on the bus.

I have never seen the city New Look driver's window reconfigured in that manner before - very interesting.

Actually, it puts the availability almost precisely at the same height as that of GM's Old Looks.

Funny how a simple solution can solve a major problem!

Thanks for the photos.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

JimmiB -

PSNJ M787 a TDM-5108 delivered in 1958. By time of instant photo, the Coach a bit long in the tooth...

When TNJ started selling off the a/c-equipped TDM5108's, some of them ended up in the midwest. Deluxe Motor Stages, out of the Detroit area, had one with the factory air set-up. I saw it several times on short distance charters in Michigan and Ohio.

Another company, Greenlawn Transit Line, from Columbus, OH, had a 5108 from the Public Service/TNJ N-series, also with factory air. It had been fitted with a restroom and was seen frequently on baseball charters in Cincinnati in the mid-seventies. It often appeared there in company with Greenlawn's PD3751 Silversides. They made an interesting couple.

Hey, Roy:

MANY THANKS for sharing this info.......I had NO inkling of this, whatsoever!

The Midwest was sure a long, long way from the NJ Turnpike!

Sure would have loved to have seen some pics!

Thanks again.....

Roy - NYO -

So, previously owned TDM-5108 with an "aftermarket" Rest Room added! Compare, when P S N J had the Coaches on
"long" charters (and it had plenty of the work!). Evidently, the line would schedule en route "Rest Stops" as needed.

On NJ - Washington DC Charters, my conjecture is it relied on Clement's Rest (near New Castle, DE), among others...
