| Nice seeing the old Staten Island Rapid Transit car in the third photo. I rode on them hundreds of times when I was a kid, including commuting to high school every day. |

You'd better believe it!
If only all of those magnificent 4510's were still prowling the streets of Brooklyn!
These were BUSES as BUSES should be! ("THE HONEYMOONERS" theme would fit these classic photos perfectly!)
Note, too, the ex-STATEN ISLAND RAPID TRANSIT cars, that the NYCTA had purchased in 1953, when the SIRT abandoned passenger service on two of their three lines.
These cars were used on the long-gone Culver Shuttle, through the early 60's.
I remember riding these fine old cars many times on the SIRT as a young lad!
And, man, do I remember when Staten Island seemed to be "where all the old NY buses go to retire"!
Yes, my friend, those were the days, indeed!

Though those old SIRT cars only lasted in Brooklyn until the early 60's, those that remained on Staten Island lasted in service until the mid-1970's.......
Yep, way back when, they built both BUSES and RAIL EQUIPMENT to LAST!
So much variety we took for granted!

The MACK in the background clearly hasn't seen any service for quite some time.....

That's one of those deals where they took an old timer and made it into a field office, shop car or storage bin - they were great for that.
Green Line (NY) had one of their pre war Mack CM's in the back yard at Rockaway Boulevard (now JFK depot) for years to store odd items.
It's no wonder that I couldn't identify the subway cars! - weren't they originally owned by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad that I believe once ran the Staten Island lines?

Yes, you are correct...until 1971, the SIRT was a subsidiary of the B&O.
In 1925, the SIRT was electrified, and new BMT-style MU cars were delivered, in anticipation of the SIRT being linked to the BMT's 4th Avenue line in Brooklyn via a new tunnel under the Narrows.
To this day, tunnel pockets for this never-built tunnel still exist near the BMT station at 59th St. in Brooklyn.
Had this plan come to reality, it would have enabled Staten Island commuters a one-seat ride into Manhattan (Chambers St.), via the BMT.
Back to the buses.......
I can remember, going back to the mid-70's, two ex-Yonkers MACKS being used as storage sheds by the old BLUE & WHITE company, on Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen.
Sure would have loved to have seen at least one of these classic coaches preserved!

A little history about the coach standing to the left side of the frame below;
It's fleet # D1244 - a 1941 Twin Coach Model 41 GE (gas electric) and one of one hundred and ninety numbered from 1100 to 1289 ordered by the Brooklyn Bus Corporation but received by the City of New York Board of Transportation that had taken over the company during Twin's performance of the contract.
In 1945, all of these Twins were refitted with Hercules Diesel engines (which added the 'D' to the fleet number) but to little avail because by 1948 all pre war Brooklyn Bus equipment had been retired.
