At this time, I feel it only fitting to pay tribute to a fine gentleman I've long admired, the man who started it all, Thomas N. Mcarter.
This forward-thing gentleman was the president of PS for 36 years, before retiring at age 75, in 1945.
The great changes he had seen throughout his years as the head of this powerful, far-flung company....

NYO -
"He also served!". His tenure had the company through the duration of WWII. At time of retirement,
guess best to let the younger guys deal with the Postwar issues...

Vern.....
Exactly!
Mr. McCarter MORE than "fulfilled his duty". and now it was time to let the "young blood" take the reins...hey, he HAD to relax SOMETIME!<G>
By the time he passed away in 1955, PS was entirely motor coach, with the exception of the Newark City Subway.
All in all, I think that this fine gentleman should have been quite proud of his many achievents, throughout the years.....truly an industrious, forward thinker!

I would like to thank you gentlemen for this excellent thread. Until now I had little knowledge of PS except that I knew it was a large operation.
I've been following this thread and find it fascinating. What an interesting history lesson. |

You are MOST WELCOME, my friend!
As a lifelong "Joisey Boy" who grew up in the 60's (and loving buses!), I guess it comes as no surprise how near and dear the late, great PS system is to my heart!
I try......

Just recieved a neat postcard from eBay today......
Card depicts a beautifully restored PS TDH-4512, # J411, originally delivered to PS in 1955.
Restored bus is/was owned by Chet and Ron Furmaneck, two fellows who have purchased and restored a number of vintage NJ-area coaches.
Postcard was printed by Mary Jayne's Railroad Specialities, Inc.
Hard to believe that out of the hundreds of similiar coaches that once ran in New Jersey, only a handful survive today.
Truly living history.......
