A WHITE 798 "down under"??
BLIMEY, MATE! 'ERE'S A BLOOMIN' GO!"
As I've long believed only BRITISH-made buses ran in Australia (until I learned about the Flxibles that were built there from 1950 through 1960), a WHITE 798 was indeed the LAST type of "Yank" bus that I would have expected operating down there!
I have not seen a WHITE in my area in at least 44 years!!
You certainly have a Masters Degree in "BUSOLOGY 101"!!

H. M. White, Suffolk, VA with the SCENICRUISER, is trifling with the old line GREYHOUND aficiandos?
Fleet number of W-802? Recalls postwar numbering plan when it was, in fact, many GREYHOUND LINES...
"W" as in "Western"? (I can't pin down if "W" used prior establishment of Western.)

The SCENICRUISER, without a doubt, is easily the most FAMOUS American bus ever built, even eclipsing the elegant, stylish, magnificent original EAGLES, over at Big Red!!!
IMHO, the SACENICRUISER was MORE than a BUS.....it was truly an AMERICAN ICON......a gleaming, stunning symbol of the glorious America of the 50's and early 60's.....an America, sadly, that no longer exists today.
What American highway coach was so revered.....and as well-known.....by the general public?
What American highway coach was the obvious favorite among the manufacturers of tin toys of Japan, for American export, some 50-odd years ago?
At once, the SCENICRUISER exuded a distinct aura of both subtle elegance and surging power.......here, indeed was a modern bus that came to symbolize America, like no other bus before.....or after.....has managed to do.
To us today, the SCENICRUISER also calls to mind a long-ago era in bus travel, when passengers still dressed in thier "Sunday Best" when traveling via highway coach.
No scruffy jeans, tank tops, or flip-flops, when you traveled on the SCENICRUISER, during its heyday!!

You got that right! Was born in 1960. I would still dress today in my Sunday Best going on Highway coach, and in Mexico last year (where have those stickshift-oldies) I dressed well..still do when I do the movies..and as for the scruffy jeans, tank tops, flip flops..never wear ..and that era with me is still with me...and the ScenicCruiser is still a househole woird where I live.

To say that is a photo of a VERY unorthodox SCENICRUISER is indeed an understatement!! Thanks for sharing this!

As always, greatly appreciate "sage words of wisdom" from one with much knowledge on the bus front!
I could never fully understand why the PD-4501's had such a brief production span; the 4104's were in production for four years before they were discontinued.
Like the classic VW "Beetle", which remained virtually unchanged on the outside for decades, I've long felt that the same could have held true for the 4501.
Internal improvements and refinements, but, basically, the same sleek, modern, instantly recognizeable- coach on the outside.
Though the "BUFFALO" was a smaller, two-axle coach, it is quite clear where the inspiration for this series came from.
At TRAILWAYS, the famed EAGLE remained THE "trademark" "Big Red" coach through the decades, with some changes and modifications through the years.
If only the same had held true for the PD-4501.......

The production model PD4501's were produced in 1954,55,and 56. There were 1,001 produced including the preproduction prototype. And there was the first "Scenicruiser", the experimental "GX-2".
The PD4104 aka "Highway Traveler", was produced from 1953 until 1960.
And there was the experimental PD4901 which shared components of both of them.
The Scenicruiser was designed by Greyhound and GM Coach engineers, and was partially styled by famous industrial designer Raymond Loewy,
one of his masterpieces, in the league of his magnificent PRR GG-1 locomotive.
The primary reason production ended in 1956 was the intervention of the US government. For years, Greyhound and GM had a very cozy relationship, and Greyhound as one of the biggest customers was given priority on new coach deliveries to the detriment of other carriers.
This resulted in litigation that as we know now, ended GM coach production, with Greyhounds move to MCI.
At one point the government demanded that GM fairly schedule deliveries to all carriers, and even decreed that GM must sell the Scenicruiser to other carriers. Since Greyhound designed it and commissioned GM to build it for only their exclusive use, they were dismayed.
They finally decided that since they made up almost a fifth of the fleet, and were able to hold down all the prestige routes nationally, they had enough of them to serve as the flagship and "halo" vehicle. So they told GM to cease building them so no one else could get them. |

I never heard any account of the SCENICRUISER history, tied to some sort of "cause and effect" ruled by ANTI-TRUST law and machinations.
I don't happen to believe it! The N C L, and DETROIT DIESEL cases went nowhere in particular. So much of litigation of the era, the "theory
of the case" logic without any merit and entirely fatuous. (Anti Trust Law is more readily understood when it is thought as more a test of new
hires at DoJ. The guy who could bring down the GM Demon would have high marks in the "permanent record" at the agency. All foolishness!)
It was the work of fools to suggest third parties ought to rule how new SCENICRUISER coaches were to be sold. In all of it, GREYHOUND
had brought the ball to the game. It was their design! So G L didn't wish to license out its proprietary designs? Our governing types wasted
their time on the issues? Did they later, ever demand C T S sell its signature EAGLE to G L? Fair is fair here...
In my own work with a major carrier, just a bit later in the era, I learned what foolishness an ANTI-TRUST case! It was instructive to learn
careful and methodical preparation by a Defendant can beat the charges, in near all cases. Makes one wonder whether the initial filings are
product of some sort of Clown College (that insults Clowns, I know!). Besides, a case filed circa 1956 an Onanist exercise. No way Gen. DDE
would let it get a life of its own...
Hint: There is a great deal of law work conducted in Georgetown (DC) saloons, and any number of "better class", expense account gin mills.
Some of the solutions occasionally have some merit?

Thanks, John. As you can see, I just joined this board. It has a lot of interesting subjects. I love to reminisce about the 'good-old-days'.
When, to borrow from the old PRR and Cadillac, Greyhound Lines was "The Standard Busline of The World"
