WHOOOOOOOOAAAAA, NELLIE!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

You deserve to have a STATUE erected in your your honor (in Hibbing, perhaps?) for both your OUTSTANDING post and DYNAMITE photos!!!!!!!!!! Very Happy Very Happy

The SCENICRUISER, without a doubt, is easily the most FAMOUS American bus ever built, even eclipsing the elegant, stylish, magnificent original EAGLES, over at Big Red!!! Shocked

IMHO, the SACENICRUISER was MORE than a BUS.....it was truly an AMERICAN ICON......a gleaming, stunning symbol of the glorious America of the 50's and early 60's.....an America, sadly, that no longer exists today. Sad

What American highway coach was so revered.....and as well-known.....by the general public?

What American highway coach was the obvious favorite among the manufacturers of tin toys of Japan, for American export, some 50-odd years ago?

At once, the SCENICRUISER exuded a distinct aura of both subtle elegance and surging power.......here, indeed was a modern bus that came to symbolize America, like no other bus before.....or after.....has managed to do.

To us today, the SCENICRUISER also calls to mind a long-ago era in bus travel, when passengers still dressed in thier "Sunday Best" when traveling via highway coach.

No scruffy jeans, tank tops, or flip-flops, when you traveled on the SCENICRUISER, during its heyday!!

Am I biased? Opinionated? Confused

Who, me? Rolling Eyes

NYO -

The photo lacks tight and crisp definition, but... It is trying to tell a story along the side. So, we can guess it
was rollout of a SCENICRUISER set of schedules. In this case, NEW YORK (Manhattan) and either, 1) West
points via NJTPK - PATPK - Possibly Beyond, or 2) Buffalo via NYTWY. Note the photo depicts E-5627, and
EASTERN GREYHOUND (however that concept was defined at date).

timecruncher -

The original installation of twinned, DETROIT 4-71 blocks? Likely influence of Dwight Austin. The layout worked
on his earlier PICKWICK designs. The matter of the SCENICRUISER and the contentious GM - GREYHOUND
divorce case? I've seen print on it. May be detail in links to Doc Rushing work on the 'Net. It was a mess.
IIRC, covered in the Jackson work...

NYO - All -

OK, New York hands! What's the timeline? Could this "publicity glossy" date to when GREYHOUND was still using its facility at PENNA STATION site?

The "E-" prefix can still confuse. One must consider whether the later "E-", which had consolidated Central ("C-") and Pennsylvania ("P-") letters.
Else, a just earlier "E-" identified routes between New York, and New England Points.

At time of SCENICRUISER rollout, GREYHOUND circulated some grand ideas of the coaches on truly long haul, continent spanning journeys...

I would qualify this statement - the Scenicruiser is perhaps the most famous American intercity bus, but I would have to cite the GMC New Look as the most famous American bus of all, judging by its overall sales numbers, its three decades in production and the number of imitators it spawned.

Jim - John - All -

Perhaps a suggested use, "...widely thought iconic..."? Are there degrees of iconic? I'll need to check. I know that in use of "unique",
there are no degrees or comparatives. It either is, or it isn't.

Jim......

I've long believed that, on the transit side of things, both the OLD LOOK and the FISHBOWL were the most famous.....and most easily recognizeable.....of ALL transit coaches.

Both types were produced for many years, and they seemed to be just about everywhere, back in the day!

Though, of course, MACKS, WHITES, BRILLS, and TWINS were commonplace, it was the GM products that MORE than held center stage!

Can you belive that the FISHBOWL has been with us now over a HALF-CENTURY? Shocked

Recall, too, that the FISHBOWL also played a part in GREYHOUND history; serving at the 1964/65 World's Fair, as well as in commute service in the San Francisco area.

Whenever I hear that old song, "KING OF THE ROAD", a GM coach always come to mind..... Very Happy

Heres another cool vintage "mystery" SCENICRUSER portrait, circa late 1960's (judging by the autos).

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that this picture might have been taken somewhere in NJ......sure looks like a PSNJ coach on the right, possibly carrying a "SCHOOL" sign on the dash; also, license plates on vehicles look like then-current NJ plates.....

The picture of the Michaud Scenicruiser was taken in front of their old garage in Salem, MA. My guess is that Bob Redden, who lived not far away in Lynn, MA, took that photo in 1969 when Michaud first received it. This was the first Scenicruiser sold to another operator when Greyhound began to dispose of them.

Michaud also ran some school service using GM old-looks in fleet colors. A number of New England operators obtained old-looks from Public Service.

I believe the Greyhound Scenicruiser was the most famous bus of all time.

Back in the fifties and sixties, the Scenicruiser was a household word. Ordinary people who had no interest whatsoever in buses knew what a Scenicruiser was. It captured the public's imagination in much the same way that jet airliners did in later years. No other bus before or since was so recognizable to an ordinary citizen.

Roy -

Without doubt, the Marketing, Advertising and Promotion of SCENICRUISER ought to be in textbooks as classically good work!
