The last time I rode on a Staten Island bus was about 1968; the last two I remember riding were a MACK and an Old Look.......clearly, this was NOT a recent trip, by ANY means......

Absolutely true, for the most part. My dad used to complain about the "recycled" equipment all the time. But, at least one exception was the 1956 Mack C-49DTs. They were brand new when S.I. got them. |

Hankg42:
Appreciate the info!
Interesting that the MACK C-49DT's were the exception to the general rule on Staten Island; I can still remember my first ride on a Staten Island bus (a MACK), from the St. George ferry terminal to South Beach.
This was way back around 1962.
In "NEW YORK TRANSIT MEMORIES", by Harold A. Smith, there's a good photo of a "6000 series" MACK (#6002), holding down an "R-112" line schedule, in 1967.
According to the photo caption, the 6000's began thier service life in Brooklyn, and, (not surprisingly!) finished out thier days on Staten Island.
It's all so long ago, now......
John

The last MACKS of the NYCTA were living on borrowed time when this 1968 photo was taken at the St. George ferry terminal, showing #6022 just beginning its run......

Came across another photo of "SF-18" ("SNOW FIGHTER"), taken at ENY in 1969.
Perhaps Mr. "L" (or someone else knowledgeable) can tell us the ancestry of this ancient coach.......

MACK #6001 was the "new kid on the block" in Brooklyn when this photo was taken in 1956.
According to Guy E. Martin's excellent "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT BUSES", 317 of these coaches went into service in 1956, most being assigned to runs in Brooklyn and Staten Island.
Interesting to note, too, that the 25 C-50-DT's ("2400"-series) rostered by "FIFTH AVENUE COACH" were (according to Mr. Martin's "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT BUSES"), considered unpopular from the onsent.
I'm guessing that thier unpopularity was with thier operators.
And, to think, that out of all the MACKS once operated by the NYCTA, only one survives today........

And, I certainly join Mr 'L' in his WELCOME!
There a great deal of good work on site here, with
thorough accounts and data of so much bus and transit
history and events...

Not positive, but I think the new C-49-DTs that Staten Island received were in the 6200 and 6300 series. S.I. also had some of the older C-50-DTs kicking around at that time. After the black on the C-50s, I remember thinking how cool the jade green colored steering wheel was on the C-49s. I have also seen that Mack fire trucks of that era had a red steering wheel. |

Hankg42:
Appreciate this interesting trivia!
The few pics of MACKS on Staten Island that I have seen were of the 6200's.
I always thought they looked thier best in the last scheme they wore, with the fancy "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT AUTHORITY" script above the windows.......this is what I remember as a kid. Class!
While we are discussing Staten Island buses of years back, I remember an old 1950s/early 60s photo that was quite large, used as part of an advertising poster at some MTA bus stop shelters, back in the 90's. (the ones I recall were in Manhattan).
I remember the photo showing a Staten Island Old Look that had become stranded in a flood; what the ad was for, I honestly have not the slightest idea.
I was going to take a picture of this sign, but, somehow, never got around to it.
Does anyone else remember this?

Here's an interesting photo of MACK #6223; clearly, this photo was taken when these buses were new in 1956, as can be seen by the MACK just to the right of #6223.
The standee windows are sporting a banner, which, (from other photos I've seen) must read:
""SURE IT'S A MACK"

FAR too fine to perish......some of the finest transit coaches ever to hit the streets of "NEW YAWK" are represented here.
One DOES indeed get tired of rubber-tired shoe boxes and giant mutated insects after awhile.....
