From what I recall, the color for the 'JFK Express' was a slightly darker shade of blue (PMS 312) than the pre-1979 3, E and M lines, but lighter than that of the A train both pre- and post-'79. |

Funny you brought this up.
I've long thought that shade of blue (used on the JFK Express) was darker that that used on "The Big 'A'", but thought, perhaps it was the way the colors showed up in the photos.
IMHO, had the "TRAIN TO THE PLANE" been initiated sometime between 1960-1963), I can see "Artens" (aka "Thunderbirds") being used, or, had this service started up about 1964/1965, R-32 "Brightliners".........

Any subway enthusiast who recalls the classic 1950's "SUPERMAN" episode, "A SHOT IN THE DARK", will recall the stock footage showing a train of prewar "Eye-En-Dee" cars on the "AA" (same footage used in Richard Widmark film, "PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET", and the 1957 "I LOVE LUCY"episode, "LUCY & THE LOVING CUP)
Of course, we already know, MANY liberties were taken in this episode, regarding subway operation in "Noo Yawk"!
Note how the photo captions have the train as the "M" (this was only the distorted, blurred "AA" seen here!)
When Jimmy Olson, fleeing the crooks, jumps aboard a train (and, in the scene where a motorman is knocked out) the train was clearly an "Eye-Are-Tee" prewar car (note vestibule and single-panel door!)
(At the time of this episode, "Hi-V's" were also still in use, and would be until 1958)
A number of "Lo-V's" would remain in mainline service until 1964.
Some wonderfully classic sound effects clearly recall the distinctive, memorable growling of the prewar trains (note, also, station signed "34TH STREET")

The "Gibbs" cars that inaugurated "Eye-Ar-Tee" service back in "Nineteen-Four," however, would be retired in 1955 once the R-17's arrived to handle service on their East Side lines. As this Adventures Of Superman episode was the second season and in B&W, the Gibbs' would've still prowled mainline service at that point. |

It is ironic that the retired "Hi-Vee's" only lasted a few years in work train service, while, a good number of "Loh-Vee's" could still be seen (albeit in a battered state) through the 70's and into the early 1980's.
A number of 1938 "WF" cars made it into work service, and were still being used in that capacity through the 70's,.
Yet, only ONE survives today.
The "WF" cars were the first "Eye-Are-Tee" cars to dispense with vestibules, which "Eye-Are-Tee" cars utilized since 1904; they were also the first to utilize roller curtains (end only)
When one quickly glances at a "Hi-V" photo,many would think "Lo-V"; however, the dead giveaway here would be the heavy arms and related mechanics used to operate the vestibule doors; much has been written on how brutal these manual doors were to operate......

Speaking of "QP", here's an interesting shot of a train of WF "Bluebirds" approaching the station, circa-1964; this photo also provides a good view of the long-disused 2nd Avenue El tracks, seen at right..........
