Since your the expert here (you and our friend MaBSTOA 15), I have a few questions I'd like to toss your way...........
1:
We've talked about the B&QT trolleybuses being replaced by new "Jetson" Fishbowls in 1960; do you think that this MIGHT have also been a "publicity event" for the "Tee-Yay", in making a sharp contrast between the "old" trolleybuses and the new Fishbowls?
2:
When the "Eye-En-Dee" was extended into Queens in the mid-1930s, which stations had "feeder" bus service?
3:
At the time of the infamous 1962 strike, did FACL have any plans "on the table" to by any more new buses?
4:
Did the "Tee-Yay" operate special buses to the 1964 World's Fair from Manhattan?
Appreciate info, as always.....

Bus/subway transfers......
I know, like so many once-commonplace facets of daily transit operations, paper transfers have vanished.
Am curious as to when the last "paper transfers" were used between the buses and subways.............

Transfers............
".......on June 12, 1940, a paper transfer issuance was established between the El and subway stations of the IND Concourse line at 155th Street....."
".......on July 1, 1948, a two-cent transfer between surface line trolleys and buses and the El was established in the Bronx. This arrangement was cancelled on June 30, 1952......"
"........in 1942, after Second Avenue El service from South Ferry to Queens was abandoned, for the riders who formerly rode these trains, a paper transfer issuance was established between the Third Avenue El and the IRT Queens line at 42nd Street........."

Let's see now . . .
1) This appeared to have been a forerunner to " 'stoa," in 1970, discontinuing the use of the '58 "Shermans" with the protruding front sign boxes in Manhattan, either prematurely retiring them or shipping them off to Brooklyn for "Tee-Yay" service. In short, emphasizing the "shiny and new" at the expense of older rolling stock that still had some life in them yet. But also, wasn't the "Tee-Yay" under some "hard and fast" deadline to wean themselves completely off anything even remotely "trolley"? I know when La Guardia was Mayor, I seem to recall him citing a 1960 deadline for going "all bus."
2) I seem to recall reading in the Building the Independent Subway book, and a photo to the effect thereof, that Roosevelt Avenue (and the "Eye-Are-Tee's" 74th Street-Broadway station) had a "feeder" to Q82 (?) to what opened as "New York Municipal Airport," but a hastily made sign at the bus stop corrected it to "La Guardia Field." That's that I know of. A few other bus stops were around the then-169th Street terminus of the "Eye-En-Dee's" Jamaica line.
3) I hadn't heard that one, but I did hear about FACL, during the strike that knocked them out permanently, attempting to restart their routes with non-union replacements before the TWU shot that down. That plus their squirreling away the "best" of their rolling stock (including the experimental #2500) over to Westchester for service on their WST routes, thus leaving " 'stoa" to scramble for suitable "other" replacements (i.e. the "Tee-Yay's" 4510's) to cover their service up to their ordering new buses beginning in '63.
4) I don't know about the "Tee-Yay" in that regard, but " 'stoa" seemed to have had such special service; I saw a B&W photo somewhere of one bus in the 5200's (part of the 1964-65 order of Fishbowl "Bullets") marked "World's Fair" from around "Toid Avenyah" and 59th Street across from Bloomingdale's (no doubt headed for Queens via the 59th Street a.k.a. Queensboro Bridge). |

As usual, once again, you MORE than answered my questions; thanks for taking the time to share some interesting historical info!
I STILL believe that "stoa's" Old Looks (with the protruding front signs) were retired far too earlier; these tanks indeed had a good number of years left in them (Your's Truly will forever wonder why none of the Hudson County independents ever bought any)
Regarding FACL purchasing new buses (had they survived the '62 strike), I can easily see them purchasing at least some "Dangerfields"; had FACL still been around in the early RTS era, I can also see them purchasing "Torpedoes".......

Regarding your excellent commentary on the R-42s, over at SubChat.........
When the last of the "classic" IND/BMT cars ("Brightliners/"Brightliner Wannabes" [R-38]/40s/42s) were "improved" in the 80s, IMHO, these cars became "shells" of their former shelves.
The "Em-Tee-Yay" removed all the standee straps (I HATED the overhead bar replacements), and I also had no love for the new "yecccch" interior paint scheme.
And don't get me started on the replacement of the end sign boxes with those ridiculous little electronic "cyclop" signs
Recall, also, the blue doors on the "Brightliners"?
Those doors indeed gave the cars a smart, "snappy" look that was quite easy on the eyes.
The loss of the blue stripes also, I feel, left much to be desired.
Oh. well, at least we've memories and photos to remind us of what we all once took for granted...........

Just thinking..........
The now-classic R-42s dated to between 1969 and 1970.
Recall, that during those years, "Tee-Yay"/"Em-Tee-Yay" orders for both Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" continued.
On the "stoa" side, in early 1970, the first "Dangerfields" arrived; this was an order of 128 a/c-equipped buses, numbered between #4600 and #4727.
This order also allowed the remaining TDH-5106s to be put in storage.
As we all know, subway cars are (for the most part) kept in service for many years more than the buses; just look at how many years had already elapsed, since the last Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" were retired, when the "42s" made their final runs, several years back........

What's in a name?
By the time that the R-42s were entering service, the "Old Order" had already changed.
The old NYCTA was now the MTA; the new "M" logos were now emblazoning the sides of new orders of subway cars, as wll as replacing the classic, stylized "TA" medallions on the "batwing" buses (as well as the "OA" emblems on the "stoa" buses)
The smart-looking, stylized script over the windows of both "Tee-Yay" and "stoa" Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" were also poised to disappear.
The "Slant 40s" were the last new subway cars to display the old 1960s "TA" insignias (oddly, the R-38 "Brightliner Wannabees" lacked these)
Recall, also, that the "42s" were the last new cars to be delivered, before a style of subway car entered service, the R-44 )followed several years later by the look-alike R-46)
The 42s, also, were the last BMT/IND cars to be furnished with standee straps.
Indeed, times were a-changin'-------------
