Fellows:
Like modern light rail cars, most modern transit buses these days seem to resemble either massive shoe boxes, or huge, mutated insects (some replete with antennas!)
While New Looks were indeed futuristic and startling in appearance when they debuted nearly 60 years ago, they did not induce nightmares of giant metallic, human-swallowing eels!
I can more or less like a modern bus if it isn't too "flamboyant" or "mutated" in appearances; blah, bland boring paint schemes (especially white-on-white) do nothing at all for a boxy vehicle; nor does a "creative" paint scheme that echoes graffiti-like scrawlings.
However, I feel that a boxy bus could easily be made attractive to the eye perhaps utilizing a simple, yet handsome paint scheme (maybe echoing a long-defunct predecessor company)
However, a bus or a light rail vehicle that more resembles a giant, slithering serpent or a monstrous, prehistoric mutant insect is another matter altogether; I have seen some truly SCARY-looking light rail vehicles (and buses), especially in Europe and Asia..........there are some pretty HIDEOUS vehicles operating on French and Italian systems that are quite nightmarish, to say the least! ("Quartermass And The Pit", anyone).........??
Some of the newest light rail cars are eerily similar to the "railroad worm" of South America, right down to the glowing head!!!!
I guess, when it comes right down to it, I'll take a bus that resembles a large box......at least, it doesn't scare the bejesus out of me, and make me want to grab the largest Flit gun I can find!!!!!!!!
What are your views on this?
"NYO"
If you glimpse a picture of a three-section "tram on tires" (a three section articulated unit built by Bombardier's French Division), you'll scratch your head and wonder if an American cousin once devoured the leaves of your backyard plants........(!!)

Though the old GRUMMAN buses were indeed boxy in appearance, they still had an attractive appearance, thanks to some simple, but pleasing paint schemes...........

SEPTA's now-vintage Kawasaki cars are perhaps the epitome of boxy transit vehicle design; the oh-so-bland-and-boring "paint" does nothing whatsoever to add attractivness to the car.
However, a simple, yet tasteful paint scheme (yes, I DO realize paint IS expensive these days!) would truly work wonders for such vehicles.
A version of the classic PTC scheme, or SEPTA's handsome 1970's "Gulf Oil" paint would indeed make a big difference here, overall.............

I was going to have said that many "modern" buses (non-"Artics") looked more like huge milk cartons. Having been through the school system myself and speaking from something resembling experience, I wonder if the designers of those types of buses had similar class assignment to do designs of vehicles from old milk cartons or other similar packages for foodstuffs. |

W.B.:
MAN!!!!!!
You really HIT the proverbial NAIL right on the head here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, that's JUST what most of the modern "boxy" buses look like!!
NJT's NABI's are indeed big rolling boxes; NJT's current "paint" scheme does nothing for them (in all honesty, I have never cared for any NJT paint)
Some years ago, I saw an nJT NABI in a mostly red ad wrap; the red REALLY made the bus look sharp (sans wrap); I was reminded of the classic "RED ARROW" buses that operated out of London, back in the 60's and 70's...........vERY nice indeed!
I have also hoped that NJT would at least paint a few NABI's in PSNJ "heritage" gray and white, complete with dash wings......now, THERE's a really cool way to jazz up a "milk carton"!!!!
Please excuse me, now, while I get out an empty milk carton, a scissor, and some Elmer's glue.........

A basic, simple, yet attractive paint scheme once went quite a long way in making an otherwise boxy bus look quite attractive, as can be clearly seen here in this now-classic "Noo Yawk" street scene..............

Though, as time went by, I grew to like the "classic" RTS, I was never a fan of the "baby" versions; they always reminded me of an oversized Dustbuster!
A bland, virtually all-white scheme did nothing to make the vehicles more attractive, IMHO.......
