Old Look 4007,
I've moved Gar Wood and Aerocoach to their own thread.
Have fun!
Attached is what is believed to be the last known Gar Wood Coach made after being taken over by Aerocoach.
It was a 1940 Aerocoach Model Gar Wood EFI and was operating as fleet # 124 for Yankee Coach Lines, Inc. under license to Yankee Trailways of Chicago, Illinois.
You can still see the classic Gar Wood passenger windows but the front clip has certainly been overhauled!

Here's another original Gar Wood 'shoe shaped' bus;
This one operating as fleet #611-8E for Eastern Michigan Motorbuses and bound for Mt. Clemens - roughly sixteen miles north of Detroit.
#611-8E was a pre Aerocoach 1937 Model CTF powered by a series 'C' Ford Transit type engine.
All I can say is that it must have been a strange thing to drive!

Mr Linsky,
Thanks so much for posting pics and details on the various Garwood buses.
The 'shoe bus' has come to be one of my favorites.
Agreed, it must have been interesting to drive it! |

I would imagine it to drive like a long 'step-van' or 'jitney'.... |

Now that we know what the exterior looks like, lets now take a look from the inside. Despite the goofy looking design, the interior looks very conventional and roomy looking.

Another rare Gar Wood found under the flag of Trailways.
The Trailways System was certainly a glutton for punishment when it came to their choice of off beat bus brands and it was probably because of Greyhound's influence over Yellow Coach when it came to potential competitors for nationwide service.
A little history of Safeway Trailways;
Safeway Trailways was incorporated 1931 as Safe Way Lines and renamed Safeway Lines in 1933 followed by joining the Trailways System in 1937 and eventually being sold to Transcontinental Bus System in 1966.
I can't imagine what a ride from Chicago to New York would have been like in a Gar Wood!

One of the major Trailways companies, Burlington Transportation Company, dba Burlington Trailways, was an exception, as they used mainly Yellow and later GMC's like Greyhound's. They had Super Coaches and Silversides. The Trailways standard-bearer for most of the other Trailways carrier's in that era were ACF's. They did have a smattering of the lesser brands as well.
As for traveling from Chicago to New York in that Garwood, with those uncomfortable looking seats.....well, no thank you.... |
