As I mentioned here, I need to upgrade the databases behind the forum and galleries to a new version of SQL. This involves creating new databases, migrating the existing data into them, then changing the configuration to point to the new database. I had hoped this would be seamless, but naturally issues always arise.
The U.S. gallery is done, and I anticipate the World gallery will also go smoothly. I am having a small problem with the forum, though - specifically, migrating the tables for the Search feature. I was wondering how many people use it, and if it would be missed if it just disappeared. I had hoped to replace it with a custom Google search feature, but it looks like that would either be severely limited or prohibitively expensive.
Even though no Search feature would be provided on the forum itself, searches could still be performed by going to Google and searching for "XXXXXX site:forum.bustalk.info"
Thoughts?

Michael,
The search feature does come in handy for me principally because of the compositions that accompany my images and the occasional need to brush up on facts from previous posts.
I have no evidence of this but it is probable that I am one of few who use the option.
Could I live without it? yes, but it would be an inconvenience.
While we're on the subject of improvements, I would ask once again if it would be possible to include a direct 'Browse' feature to the forum so that we may post photos straight from our personal albums without relying on an on line photo service for continued support of the images.
Those supported photos will all disappear from the forum in the event that a member either no longer uses a particular vendor or is unable to continue posting for personal reasons.
In my case, that would be thousands of pictures!
Many regards to you and the family,
Mr. 'L' |

I don't use the search feature, but I agree with Mr."L" that it would be nice if we could post photos directly from our own files. A couple of months ago the photo site that I was using (Webshots) went to a paid system that just stores pictures in "the cloud" which could only be seen by the paid user. I managed to download my pics from there but all in one file in random order! Anyhow, hundreds of photos I had posted on a model railroad site no longer showed. |

It looks like I'll be able to preserve the search after all. Sorry for the alarm .
The current software I use for the forum doesn't allow for direct attachments. I'll look into changing to different forum software that would allow it (I know, I've said that before...). But as far as worrying that a third party site may disappear and take your photos with it, remember that you can upload to the BusTalk Galleries and link from there! |

Many thanks, Rhode Islander, for the years of work you have put into the mechanics and management of this forum. It has given me lots of pleasure, and many questions have been answered.
----
I often search the forum, using both the site's own search tool and Google Search. The site's search tool works best with short threads, but for something on Vintage New York City, with 107 pages, it often does not specify the page!
----
Many thanks for your work.

The upgrade is finished (with all features intact). Let me know if anything doesn't work. |
