Thanks to the collection of my good friend Jim Hussing, we have the pleasure of seeing NFT number 7018 wending its way through the streets of Buffalo, New York.
Number 7018 is a 1954 GM TDH 5106 and one of thirty (7001 to 7030) delivered to the Niagara Frontier Transit System in September of that year.
1727 of these very popular 96 inch wide 5106's were built between 1953 and 1959 with a goodly number finding their way to both the private and public bus lines of New York City and vicinity.
BTW; I am still trying to find out what the special number boxes to the sides of the destination signs on NFT's buses were used for.
Thanks again to Jim for a great photo.

Those number boxes are for the Route Numbers. All new buses not already equipped with the space in the destination sign were fitted with them. All the ex Buffalo Transit Company buses retained by NFT got whole new destination signs plus the number boxes to conform to NFT operating practice. On the front of the bus, you would have the Route Number, Variation designator letter, and the destination of the bus on that particular trip. The sign in the standee window just behind the door was for the route number and name, such as 8-Main or 13-Kensington, to name two examples. That system is still in use today. |

These buses were retired about a year and a half later when the 5000-series GMC RTS-II T8H-603 buses were placed into service. |

Note also the Woolworth's store with the 1970's era logo and lettering and the Preston Trucking ('The 151 Line') straight truck. |

Not to mention the Westinghouse HMA-60 and General Electric M-1000 streetlights. |

All Hands -
Oh, yes! And, what the building in immediate background? I've been in there, back in another life. IIRC, this the building
wherein many Railroads housed Off Line Rep sites.
Importantly, behind the PRESTON truck, note the BRINK's (or moral equivalent) armored car. WHOA! Back then, the District
so very busy, had to be a regular stop for these esteemed cash transporters!
Back when I was there, the "GMC 7000" types were a welcome part of NFT. In addition, the late production, "New Look"
MACK coaches were everywhere! Another time! Another Universe! It was so long ago, abundant intense manufacturing
activity, throughout Upstate!
(EDIT) This may be the A M & A Building at 385 MAIN STREET. The Building I noted earlier? The ELLICOTT SQ BLDG, 295
Main Street. In any case, the coach apparently TT North (East) on outward travels.

See the store front (just above coach) displays, KLEINHAN'S! This recalls a long ago Buffalo!

Side Bar: YIKES! The 7000 coach displays "METRO" and not the familiar and proper, "N F T"!

Vern,
It's no wonder that the streets of Buffalo seemed crowded with 'New Look' Macks - after all, they had the first sixty off the line in early 1959 in the form of C-49-DT's numbered from 6300 to 6359.
But, that's not the only wonder here; Mack's new front end treatment was designed and 'owned' by Niagara Frontier and leased to Mack with the proviso that they receive a commission on each and every New Look model sold.
In the short period that Mack bus production continued they did sell about 150 (not counting NFT's).
Attached is one of five that went to Bee Line, Inc., of Rockville Centre, New York.
Regards,
Mr. 'L'
