HwyHauler was kind enough to forward the upper photo below with the question as to what exactly it is.
I was as much in the dark as he and did a little research.
The 'Bio Bus' is a nationwide program that brings to the classroom a rolling laboratory in which youngsters can see first hand what experiments and breakthroughs are in the offing in biological sciences.
While I'm sure that there must be a national organization involved, there is no uniformity in the equipment used by each chapter, and in the below case a used bus was purchased and completely rebuilt - great idea to use a GM New Look as the platform!
The lower photo shows the same coach before any refittings.
BTW; as you might have guessed, this bus is run on Bio Diesel.

BioBus to the Bronx
After a great weekend at the P.S. 107 Science Fair in Brooklyn, the BioBus will spend the rest of the winter travelling to a number of different middle schools and high schools in the Bronx, courtesy of the GEAR UP program at Lehman College. We will also be returning to Washington Irving High School to teach as well as develop a new chemistry curriculum, bringing the BioBus to the heart of Manhattan.

This just handed to me;
The Bio Bus pictured above is a 1974 GM Model T8H 5307A and was one of over 100 numbered in the 800's and 900's delivered to the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District of San Francisco, California between 1972 and 1976.
About Golden Gate;
Golden Gate Bus Transit carries over seven million passengers a year .
The original 132 General Motors "new look" buses, purchased between 1972 and 1976, placed the fleet among the most modern and comfortable in the country, and it continues to be so today.
The equipment caters to the long-haul Marin and Sonoma County commuters who find the accommodations so comfortable that they lie back and catch a wink or two in transit.
As of January 2007, the GGT active bus fleet consists of 195 lift-equipped buses. The GGT fleet was 100% lift-equipped upon the retirement of the original new looks from the fleet in November 1997.
In the early 1980's, GGT began its ongoing bus replacement program. Under this program, older buses are retired and replaced with new, high-capacity, "clean air" buses that accommodate persons in wheelchairs and seniors.
The district has maintained one of the original New Looks as a preserved coach.
More photos below of Bio Bus during re-fitting (note that top picture is reversed - it's not a right hand drive!).

Special thanks to Mike Sheridan of NorCal for the info.
