Indeed!
It would be many decades before power steering and automatic transmissions became commonplace on the buses!
The last front-engined buses purchased (new) by DE CAMP were the "54-A"s, which entered service in 1934.
Some used "pullers" were purchased during WW2, for increased service to New York.
After the War, these tough, growling beasts were replaced by new GM-built buses (Old Looks)
I know that, back in those days, men (no matter what company they were going to drive for) HAD to be in TOP physical shape to be able to drive those gas-driven monsters (NO WONDER the driver's uniforms had a distinct "military" air to them!)

Here's a rare photo of one of DE CAMP's postwar TD-4507s, looking quite handsome after being repainted in its new 1950s-era colors............

That's interesting, Mr. Linsky's post...
Never knew DeCamp had a route all the way to Monticello, NY. I find it hard to accept that as a "commuter route", as even today, its about a two hour trip over expressways, and back in that era, it was probably over a three hour trip on two lane highways.
I recall Short Line who "owned" that route, having some competition from Intercity Bus Co. until some time in the sixties. Intercity's primary route was local service from NYC to Patterson.
BTW, the Old Look itstelf, looks so different with the original square windows and the lack of the standee windows. Only the front end looks familiar to my eye...

Wanted to share this sad news.........
The legendary Connie Francis has passed away, she was 87.
The reson I am posting this here, is that, when she was just starting out in the music business, she would travel to and from recording sessions/engagements in New York via DE CAMP's #33.
Like so many North Jersey-ans of that era, she always referred to the PABT as "The Port of Authority" ( STILL, to this day, Your's Truly continues to do likewise!)
Connie would have ridden DE CAMP's sleek Old Look suburbans and their beefy ACF-BRILLS........indeed, it was a far different world, back then.
RIP, Connie, we're all feeling the loss of "New Jersey's Favorite Singing Sweetheart"..............

Here's one of DE CAMP's handsome ACF-BRILLs* ("BRILL-boas"); Mom and I rode these beefy, growling old buses many times 60-plus years ago on the "22", riding out to West Orange, to visit my aunt and uncle.
Connie Francis was still recording, back in those days!

*I am MOST fortunate to have a complete roller curtain from one of these big bruisers in my collection, a highly-valued treasure indeed!

Sorry to hear of the passing of Connie Francis. She was one of my favorite singers from back in the day.
I don't have any roller curtains from De Camp buses BUT I am fortunate to have Connie Francis's greatest hits album! |

Connie was a true "Jersey Girl", and, indeed, we all loved her (her excellent autobiography, "WHO'S SORRY NOW?" is indeed a MUST READ fro anyone who loved Connie and her timeless music!)
From what I can remember, DE CAMP retired their BRILLS about 1966, or not long agter.
I do recall them retiring their Old Looks early than some other Jersey operators........

Here's an interesting 1974 photo of an ex-DE CAMP Old Look near the Lincoln Tunnel entrance in Manhattan, which is a bit of a "mystery"........

(courtesy: nycsubway.org)
Note:
1:
Bus is devoid of any "DE CAMP" lettering
2:
Blank destination sign
3:
Note driver is not wearing a uniform.
There are some sort of "company markings" near the bottom of the bus, but is too blurry to read.
