Here's a nice collection of timetables and historical details about one of the founding airlines that developed into Braniff. What's interesting to me, is that its founder was also involved with Bowen bus line...which later became Continental Bus System, and later was acquired by M E Moore, who merged several other carrier's into the Transcontinental Bus System (Continental Trailways).

Of particular interest also, is the reference 'congratulating' the achievements of the Texas and Pacific Ry. Fly by day, ride train by night, in a coordinated service that United, and TWA also practiced with other railroads. |

It is sobering to think that, today, in 2025, not only have virtually all of the once-prosperous, well-known railroads are now but "fallen flags" ditto, so many once-commonplace bus companies.
And, did we EVER THINK that, one day, these airlines would be relegated to the history books?

Piedmont actually still exists...they are a wholly owned American Airlines regional subsidiary, dba American Eagle, as are also PSA (Pacific Southwest Airlines), and Envoy.... |

Appreciate, as always, the additional info; quite ironic, indeed, that the airlines took so much traffic away from the railroads, and yet, so many have, like the railroads, disappeared.
Speaking of airlines past.........
I always thought it interesting that TWA never expressed interest in prop-jets (such as the VISCOUNT and the ELECTRA); the carrier went from piston-engined airliners to pure jets, with now "in between" stop with prop-jets.

Recalling the sleek, stylish L-188 "ELECTRA" (as a youngster, I remember this classic airliners at the old Newark Airport, sporting the liveries of EASTERN, AMERICAN, and NORTHWEST).........

Another popular prop-jet of the 1950s was the distinctive VICKERS VISCOUNT; the ones I remember at Newark were flown by UNITED, and, of course, had originally been part of the CAPITAL fleet...........

Sometimes known as the "Whispering Giant", the big BRISTOL BRITANNIA (prop-jet) was once used by a number of carriers, and was featured prominently in the 1960 airline disaster drama "JET OVER THE ATLANTIC", starring George Raft and Virginia Mayo (COOL cockpit/flight prep sequences as a bonus!)

A few interesting historical "tidbits" frpm the outstanding (color) photo book:
"AIRLINERS AT LAX 1956-1976" (Robert D. Archer)........
"......in 1956, Delta did not serve LAX directly, but was part of the Delta-National interchange service, between LAX and Miami, with intermediate stops......"
"......although both Capital and Northeast both were interested in buying the Bristol Britannia, the FAA raised concerns over the design of the main landing gear; a re-design would have been both time-consuming and costly, so it is not surprising that both carriers lost interest......"
"......Air Canada flew DC-8s into LAX from Montreal via Toronto......"
".....Mexicana's de Havilland Comets were the only ones to serve LAX commercially, but they remained in service for at least a decade....."
".....by the mid-1970s, most of the major long-haul airlines were flying 747s into LAX......"
"......United Air Lines stuck with the original DC-7 model with a fleet of 53, and never purchased any DC-7B or DC-7C variants......"
