I recall you mentioned that awhile ago; to be honest, I'd never noticed the variations in the grillwork.

When You's Truly was just a tad, I DO well recall seeing a/c "suboibans" ("Shermans" and Fishbowls) with the words "AIR CONDITIONED emblazoned on their flanks, made to look as though the letters were formed out of ice (GREAT visual incentive, to ride on one of these now-classic (and oh-so-COOL) buses.............

I've lived within 10 minutes (north) of Nungessers for over 50 years now; back then, it was an outstanding place to watch the buses; today, it's mostly rattletrap jitney vans (Geeze, I HATE 'EM!), insipid rolling milk cartons, and slithering "Slinkies"

During certain periods of my nearly 25 years of commuting, I was at this spot often twice daily; jere we have not only classic "suboiban" Fishbowls, but, also, a "Dangerfield" on the "#22 HILLSIDE", heading for Hoboken.

Ahhhhh, the memories.............. (date this timeless scene to 1981!)

Just imagine.....

Had there been no strike back in 1962, just imagine if FACCo began ordering only AIR-CONDITIONED buses, and, by the mid-60s, beating out the "Tee-Yay" (by a million miles!) as having the ONLY all a/c-equipped fleet in the city!

Talk about a company living up to its "tony"/"upper echelon" image!

Interesting.........

Look at "Pee-Es-En-Jay":

Though, beginning in 1960, and through to the "Tee-En-Jay" era, EVERY "suboiban" Fishbowl they ordered was a/c-equipped.

With the TRANSIT Fishbowls, however (AFAIK) it seemed to be pretty much "hit or miss" (from what I've gathered)

Perhaps all of the "suboiban" Fishbowls were a/c-equipped because of the longer lengths of the routes they traveled.........

One thing that "Pee-Es" had in common with all of the other NJ "suboiban" operators was that ALL of these Fishbowls had a/c, with the rooftop units at the rear.

Seems that it was a given, back then, that the only "suboiban" Fishbowls ordered by these now-defunct companies were all to be a/c models.......

A/C........

Of course, by the time the "En-Jay-Dee-Oh-Tee" took delivery of nearly 900 "Dangerfields" in the later 1970s for a number of New Jersey operators, "air-conditioning" were indeed the bywords for new transit/suburban buses.

The NJDOT "Dangerfields" had the distinction of being the very last "traditional" buses purchased for the State, prior to the later purchases of large numbers of both "Metro "Bs" and MCIs..................

The 1967 "ANSAIR SCENICRUISER" (see pic link on right side of page) is indeed a "pseudo Fishbowl" that, IMHO, looks like it came right out of my vintage tin toy Fishbowl collection!

I see their PD-4107 (a.k.a. "Bison") had Transign roll signs on the front. And that their rear windows were 3-piece.

One of the newspaper articles, I noticed ('Re-Equipment Program Now $3 Mill. / Big Coach Order'), used for the text Intertype Imperial with Bold - which, along with the italic version, had been used by The New York Times starting July 3, 1967.

A book focusing in detail (as you do so expertly) on the different types of roller curtains over the years, indeed, would be a long-overdue, highly-valuable addition to any transit enthusiast's library (Your's Truly would certainly purchase a copy!)

Roller curtain abbreviations, on their own, make for fascinating discussion.

As an example (from the BMT):

Then, of course, there was "L'C'L"

Also: "THRU"

Also, abbreviated subway stations signs (in my collection, I have a metal "UNION T'P'KE" platform pillar sign.............
