As always, appreciate your always-informative input. 
Regarding roller curtains, the last buses in my general area that were still equipped with them were, as follows (mid/later 1990s)
NJT "Dangerfields" (ex-NJDOT)
The few remaining NHBL Fishbowls (this included an ex-WAMTA "Dangerfield")
ACADEMY's Metro "Bs" (before electronic signs were installed)
The last few GRUMMAN "Bombers" running for the Jersey City indies.
There were a few other "holdovers" by this late date, but, what was then remaining, was indeed living on borrowed time.........

Quick question.......
If a "Tee-Yay" bus (or a group pf buses) were transferred from one depot to another, how were the roller curtains "swapped out", or was "splicing" the name of the game, in this situation?

It would appear that before a bus or buses were swapped, the depot that had them would take the roll signs out first, then inserted into the ones they got in exchange.
Speaking of which, in the "Kramdens' " twilight, not all of them were shorn of roll signs. For example, in 1972, there was a picture as on eBay, taken at the South Ferry station of the M15, of 'Tee-Yay' #7104 (from the 1957 TDH-5106 set), sporting a side sign on the front left ("15 TO 126 ST"), next to "Jetson" #621 (from the 1960 TDH-5301 order). Unfortunately, when trying to upload the file, I got a notice:
"Sorry, but the maximum filesize for all Attachments is reached. Please contact the Board Administrator if you have questions."
I may have therefore reached my limit in putting up any photos on my end. |

In any event, thanks for the info; much appreciated!
Once in a great while here (not often) I will see either a NABI or a New Flyer "Wurlitzer" which was a bus that operated on a Nwark-area run, going by the fleet numbers, which do not match those of the buses based out of the nearby Fairview garage (ex-O&B)
Obviously, these "BINOs" were "on loan".
Your's Truly hasn't seen a roller curtain around these parts in over 25 years, now......

The following information will correct, in part, one of my previous comments regarding destination roll signs and depots.
After additional research I found the following.
This only applies to the New Looks with batwings in the 8301-8780 series for MaBSTOA.
Front Signs:
Amsterdam, Kingsbridge, West Farms, Coliseum, and 132 depots: the buses assigned to these depots only had destination signs for the routes assigned to said depots
100 and 146 depots had signs for the routes assigned to both depots. A total of 90 readings.
12 and 54 depots had signs for the routes in both depots. A total of 62 readings.
The roll sign began with 16 Elmhurst Crosstown Line, followed by 15 Jackson Heights Line. Followed in this order routes 6, 12, 13, 14, 15 (23 St. Crosstown), 16 (34 St crosstown), 20, 21, 103, 106. With two No Passengers and one Special reading
One reading not listed but evident on a photo of number 8547 (still green but with M decal), reads 6 to CENTRAL PK W !!
Batwing Side Signs:
Kingsbridge, West farms, Coliseum depots only had the signs for the routes assigned to each depot.

As always, your concise and highly-detailed information are most welcome, and also add much "depth" to a given topic........much appreciated!
One thing that I have always found interesting (in viewing the photos at nycsubway.org) is the variations on front roller curtains. for instance, the use of the word "TO".
Also, the abbreviation used for "AVENUE"-------
"AVE"

I figured that about the front signs, what you laid out. 6 - 72nd Street was pingponged over the years between the 54th and 100th Street depots, and that would have been the one to go to Central Park West. It was a given that the 6 that 54th Street housed at all times was the Broadway/Sixth Avenue route between 59th Street and South Ferry. However that crosstown route would have been at 54th Street depot when it was renumbered M30 in 1974. The 20 would have been the ex-FACO 57th Street crosstown renumbered M28 in '74 (though 132nd Street, where that route was based before 1962, would later house the 116th Street ex-NYCO M20 which is today M116).
Would you also have any info on the 1971 side signs of non-batwings for Manhattan MaBSTOA routes? I know the '101A 3rd-Lex-Lenox Aves' would have been part of it, but . . . |
