Greatly appreciate the info, as always.

Ferry connection-wise, it would seem that the St. George Terminal was the undisputed king of "ferry/bus transfer" points, with South Ferry coming in second.

In a circa-1963 postcard I have, depicting a panoramic view of the St. George Terminal, no less than 17 buses ("Kramdens" and "Pattons") are on hand, with nary a Fishbowl in sight.

Long lines of vehicles waiting to board the boats for Whitehall Street and Brooklyn.

Ahhh, yes, I remember it all so well, 60-odd years later............. Wink

It should be noted, though, that NYCO / EACCo's (Eighth Avenue Coach, a NYCO subsidiary through 1951) #11 - Ninth and Amsterdam route, in the '30's and '40's (don't know about beyond), had runs that terminated south at the Christopher Street ferry, along with their usual Abingdon Square terminus. I seem to have read that their #12 - Spring and Delancey line, up to World War II, terminated at the Desbrosses Street ferry though I read that was done away with in 1930 (shades of 1970's photos along 125th Street that had buses say "125 St Pier," no?).

As for St. George, seems like Fishbowls began to appear on the "Isle of Staten" around 1965, no? Especially since the first express bus operated in what was then called the "borough of Richmond."

W.B;

Agreed; I believe that Fishbowls did not begin appearing on the "Isle Of Staten" until about 1965; prior to that date, it was all "Kramdens" and "Pattons" (which I still fondly recall!) Very Happy

The Christopher Street Ferry to Hoboken (DL&W) ran until 1955, the only DL&W ferry line to use single-deck boats.

NY RAILWAYS streetcars once terminated at the massive "Union" ferry terminal at W. 23rd Street buses; later, buses then served the terminal until the last boats departed in late 1946.....

Ferries that once docked at the foot of W. 23rd Street:

ELECTRIC FERRIES (to Weehawken; closed 1943)

DL&W (to Hoboken; closed 1946)

ERIE (To Jersey City; closed 1943)

CRRNJ (to Jersey City; closed 1942)

And in those ferries' last few years of operation (from 1936 until their respective ends), NYCO's #15 - 23d Street Crosstown buses (later M26, now M23+SBS) would take passengers there.

W.B.:

Thanks for this info.

The massive ferry terminal was also designed by the same architect who designed the 1907 DL&W terminal at Hoboken; the clock tower, also, replicated the one at Hoboken.

The interiors, also, were quite elegant and spacious.

Each railroad had its own waiting room and ticket offices; by the time of the DL&W's departure from the terminal in 1946, a few of the idle slips had already been torn down.

It was, indeed, "Noo Yawk's" counterpart to San Francisco's famed Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street.......

Photo in "BUS WORLD" magazine (circa-1984)...............

As the cover of this time-worn issue has been MIA for years, I cannot give any info on what year/month this issue hailed from.

However, there is an interesting photo showing an unidentified "Borough Bomber" ("stoa"), pulling away from the "terminal" near Pier 83.

In the background, we see a lineup consisting of two Fishbowls (one with batwings) and a new RTS..............

Begs the question which of the "Torpedoes" were in that picture. I think there were three orders already on the roads by that time (the more recent being the 3000's).

W.B.

In this photo, it is indeed impossible to "make out" numbers; you CAN, of course, clearly identify the MAKE of the buses, but, TOTALLY impossible to decipher any of the numbers........ Sad

I guess, then, that the only way to gauge what version was what type of electronic sign was on the front and side.

W.B.:

Even THAT could not be done; given photo quality, front destination reading is IMPOSSIBLE to decipher, so that rules out trying to go further withidentification....... Sad

Breaking news........

A fatal helicopter crash has happened in the Hudson River (as of yet, no known survivors), just off the ventilator building for the Holland Tunnel on the NJ side (near the site of the former ERIE terminal on Pavovia Avue (the old two story "AMERICAN EXPORT LINES" pier shed, which connected to the ventilator building, was sadly demolished years ago)

The huge Newport Center complex is nearby.

I noticed, on the news reports, an NYPD boat, the "P.O. HERMAN"* on the scene.

*(this is the largest patrol boat in the NYPD fleet, christened after an officer who, tragically, lost his life in the line of duty, back in 1989)

Also, what caught my eye was that this larger-sized NYPD craft featured a "chopped" cabin; the position of the cabin reminded me of many of the (older) "NY WATERWAY" boats ("FINOs"-"Ferries In Name Only")

Truly a tragic day.....my heart goes out to all involved, and "THANK YOU" to all the brave first responders.........

Further............

I was watcjing some interesting footage earlier, with a camera angle that showed the Holland Tunnel ventilation building (Jersey City) and beyond.

The camera angle clearly showed the trainsheds at the old DL&W terminal at Hoboken, as well as the southermost end of Wahington Street; several NJT buses were also visible.

Interestingly. ill-fated copter flew over Manhattan for 16 minutes, before turning south at the GWB (thank God this tragedy did not happen over either Manhattan or the GWB.

A true miracle was when the copter came crashing down into the Hudson (the rotors had also broken off); that it did not take out a passenger ferry (or any other harbor craft) along with it.

The pilot and the family visiting from Spain (who were on a tour) all perished.

My deepest sympathies to all involved.........

Also.......

One of the larger FDNY boats was also seen during reports on the fatal helicopter crash; it was one of the more modern vessels, sitting adjacent to the Holland Tunnel ventilation building.

Online source states that the NYPD currently has 11 boats in its fleet at present.
