I never drove Academy's H3-40's, but I did Adirondacks's. Adirondack first purchased some H3-41's back in 1994, as an incentive to the Province of Quebec, where Prevost's are built, to win the battle for rights to service Montreal. The factory's waiting list was long, so Adirondack also bought a few on the used market, to have enough to begin the initial service. There were several difference's between the earlier and later design's, besides the one foot in length. The new model was much improved. |

Interesting info; thanks for sharing!
So, you DID get to drive one of those big "H3-40s"; something about the front end reminded me a bit of the unique BEA Metro-Cammell-bodies "Commers" used in airport service (Heathrow) in the 1950s and 1960s)
In William A. Luke's "TRAILWAYS BUSES", there is a great photo of an ADIRONDACK TRAILWAYS "H3-41".......VERY impressive-looking coach!
According to the photo caption, four of the company's 20-odd "H3s" were equipped with wheelchair lifts.....

["NEW YORK"] | Adirondacks H3-41's were 62960-62967, 62974, 62975. 62962 and 62964 had wheelchair lifts. The lifts were located at the rear, inside the coach, and took away 4 seats, but no baggage space. The H3-45 moved the lift to center, and stowed in a baggage bin, but when not in use sacrificed no seats.
The H3-40's, acquired used, were 62968-62973. I disliked their hanging type mirrors, and it took some getting used to, to use them. |

A bit off-topic, but were you at all familiar with this old (New Jersey) charter outfit, back in the day?

Appreciate the input regarding the "H3-41" coaches.
I have, sadly, never ridden aboard a PREVOST; in fact, the ONLY ones I can recall were the few 1968 "CHAMPIONS" rostered by "SOMERSET", many years ago.
I would seen them either at the "Port-of-Authority" or on the Lincoln Tunnel helix.
Interestingly, "SOMERSET" was the first US company to purchase the "CHAMPION" (or any other PREVOST, for that matter)............

That makes two of us; I am not at all familiar with that company..
I could have, of course, seen some of their buses, many years ago, but have no recollection of them, or the company........

Quick questions:
1:
In your years with "ACADEMY", how many paint schemes have you seen come and go?
2:
Besides the 4106(!!) what bus have you driven that you rank as a personal "favorite"?
Always interested in your "insider input"......

Regarding "ACADEMY" paint schemes:
If memory serves me correctly, I can remember the "22" buses sporting at least three different paint schemes, over the years.
I also remember that the NJDOT-purchased Flxinle New Looks wore but one paint scheme, when they were running the "22" line............

I have only worked for Academy since 2021. Our current scheme is the silver and black, which I find attractive, on our charter fleet of Van Hool's, MCI's, and Prevost's. The newest Mercedes Tourider's also have that scheme. But I do recall the blue and white from my days in NYC.
Our contract fleet of ENC EZ Rider's, which I drive mostly at our two Century Village contracts, are white and blue, or white and black or grey.
The GMC PD-4106, as you know, is my all-time favorite driver's bus.
My current favorite has to be the Prevost X-3. |

NOT surprising about how you feel about the classic 4106 (cannot blame you!)
As a kid back in the 1960s, the only 4106s we rode (when traveling down to see cousins during the summer months) were PSNJ; in the early/mid-1980s, I often commuted on former "ORANGE & BLACK"/"INTER-CITY" coaches on the rush-hour "RIVER ROAD EXPRESS'; ALWAYS enjoyed a ride on one of these classics!
In "GM INTERCITY COACHES" (Grams/Gold) there are six pages of photos depicting the 4106.
Companies represented:
GREYHOUND
WORCESTER BUS COMPANY
MOUNTAIN VIEW COACH LINES
LAKE SHORE
MARTZ
BURLEY BUS LINES
BLUE DIAMOND
CANADIAN COACHWAYS (purchased by GREYHOUND in 1969)
According to the book, 3,227 of these now-classic buses were built...........
