DE CAMP operated handsome YELLOWS like these well into the 1960s; they were known as "streamliners".

Yep, you put just about ANY bus in GREYHOUND livery, back in the day, and you had a sure-fire "LOOKER"! Very Happy

The cynic in me question's the motivation behind Goodyear's promotion of this six wheel design, with tandem single wheels, as opposed to the more common single rear axle with dual wheels. I would imagine that on tight turns, the rear tires would swing and excessively wear out, since the bus would most likely have the forward axle driven to reduce the length of the drive shaft.

You and I were pretty much thinking along the same wavelength.

Speaking of six-wheel buses, recall that "SURFACE" had a small fleet of three-axle double-deckers, which operated for several years until being cut down to single-deck, by the 1930s

Cleveland also operated six-wheel double-deckers, through the 1920s.......

From:

"OVER THE ROAD" (Meier & Hoschek)

"........it is said that California Transit operated as many as 50 homemade six-wheelers in the mid-1920s........"

".......the chassis, with Buda six-cylinder engines, were built in Oakland; while the bodies were built in San Francisco......"

".......there were suspension issue difficulties, and there was not enough weight on each rear wheel to prevent skidding in wet weather....."

A smart-looking, dual front-axle classic from 1960s Great Britain.......

Awesome vehicle!
Really more like a "doodlebug" railway car on rubber tires, than a bus.

Interesting comments that the Company planned to only sell them to railways to fight highway competitor's, than to contemporary bus companies.
I wonder how long that business model would last? Wink

Probably until other bus manufacturer's would come up with similar designs, or government antitrust would intervene...

Could you imagine if The Budd Company, had created a scaled down version of their RDC cars to be used on highways? Shocked

traildriver:

Recall, now, if you will, SWG converting two of its YELLOW Z-250s into rail buses (early 1930s), operating them on MP rails between Pine Bluff and Texarkana (152 miles), replacing passenger trains.

These converted coaches saw the installation of lavatories, auxiliary water tanks, sandboxes, thus adding 2,500 pounds to the original weight of the vehicles.

Brake linings were also changed, for better adhesion on rails.....

BUDD............

I have seen a few rare photos of a sleek, double-ended rail car built for the READING (body was by BUDD), (I believe the rest was built by MICHELIN, but cannot recall for sure)

This rail car, clearly, was inspired by the then-new "Bullets" running on the P&W's 69th Street-Norristown high-speed line.

Recall, also, the silversiding applied to the last AEROCOACHES built.....QUITE eye-catching, indeed! Very Happy

There have been several examples of highway vehicles being modified for use on railroads, but have you ever heard of the opposite? I haven't.... Wink

Thinking more of my "fantasy" Budd RDC inspired bus...

First off, they would have to narrow it down from 10 feet wide, to 8 feet (to 8.5 feet, nowadays), then they would have to shorten it from 85 feet down to maybe 65 feet or so, and lower it from 14' 7" to max, 13 feet...

They could probably make do with a single engine, and would not need a double end cab and vestibule.

If I had photoshop or AI capabilities, I would try my hand at designing one... Very Happy
