Was VERY fortunate to come across this OUTSTANDING photo page on BECK coaches; an excellent collection of vintage BECK photos! (look for the MISSOURI PACIFIC "STEELINER")! Wink

A number of vintage BECK coaches are shown here, including the Scenicruiser-lookalikes! Very Happy

Enjoy....I sure am! Wink

*Also, make sure to spot the "Baby Yellow 743"......the front end clearly recalls those famed "Big Boys" on GREYHOUND! Shocked

Yep........."Imitation is INDEED the SINCEREST form of FLATTERY!" Wink

I would agree that Beck's designs were, to put it kindly, "derivative" of other manufacturers....besides the Supercoach copy, the two axle deck and a half looks like a VistaLiner, and the three axle deck and a half like a Scenicruiser.
Of course General Motors, due to its dominance of the industry back then, set the style standard for all others to emulate. The Flxible Clipper was a notable exception...

Mr. 'L',
Love that glimpse of the East Side Airline Terminal. Do you have any more photo's inside and outside of it? I very vaguely recall it had a sort of Art Deco decor, and had ticket counters of all the major airlines.
The low roof illustrated may be one reason that Carey discontinued service there when coaches grew too tall to use it....[/quote]

traildriver,

These are the best photos I have - enjoy,

Thank you, Mr. 'L'!
If only the 'Port' had that elegant look, working there would be a much more pleasant experience than it currently is.
I will say the 'Port' was also a much nicer place when it opened back in 1950....
Do you recall if they checked you in for a flight there, including your bags, (no security issues in those days), or did you have to claim your bags and check in at the airport?

Earlier, our good friend traildriver expressed interest in the most unorthodox bus/truck combo (the "BRUCK"), once operated by the GREAT NORTHERN.

I had posted several links with photos; however, further research this AM netted another page, with several photos of a restored vehicle.

Interesting, detailed info on the vehicles as well.

Note that these unique passenger/cargo carriers were built by KENWORTH (Also note "PACIFIC" nameplate on the nose; this is also detailed in the text)

I do appreciate your effort in digging up these photo's. You post them faster than I can keep up looking at them. Very Happy

The Kenworth is a very handsome looking coach, and looks like it was built to last.
The ones I recall were built by Crown--I believe they were similar to Highway Post Offices they also built. And perhaps instead of the GN Ry., the ones I remember were operated by Northern Pacific Transport?

Answer;

Yes they did - that was the beauty of travel in those days - everything was so convenient (they didn't know any other way and they catered to a customer's every whim!).

They did the same thing at the Airline Building across from Grand Central Terminal on Park Avenue South.

I'll let the image below and the caption that accompanied it do the walking on this one!

However, I will point out that the Flxible Clipper shown was an earlier version of the modern design as evidenced by the lack of pantographic windshield wipers and the large custom directional signals that we are so familiar with on these buses.

Photo and info courtesy of historicimages-store and is offered on eBay as 'buy it now' as item # 251057434004.

Enjoy,

Mr. 'L'

All:

In my recently aquired copy of "YELLOW COACH BUSES", by William A. Luke, there are several photos of buses "with no windows in the back", the handsome Model "P" coaches, which clearly were inspired by FLXIBLE.

Companies represented by several "P" models were:

"INDIAN TRAILS" (Owosso, Michigan)

"EDWARDS LAKE-TO-SEA-STAGES" (Williamport, PA)

"ENDERS GREYHOUND LINES" (Benton Harbor, Michigan)

"NEW MEXICO TRANSPORTATION COMPANY" (GREYHOUND affiliate)

A scene from the old "ROUTE 66" tv series; look carefully in the background.......you'll spot what appears to be a SANTA FE TRAILWAYS sign.......

NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629,

Glad to see you back on the board and I hope everything O.K. with your mom.

Great picture!

I pass that hotel every day on the way to work and, while there are newer wings attached in the rear, what you see is pretty much as it was originally built in 1912.

Thanks for sharing.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'
