|
|
A Mack advertisement that appeared in the Bus Transportation magazine of the 1950s illustrating their model C-50 for Fifth Avenue Coach.
These buses were operated on the route 15, Jackson Heights Line only! And based at their 76th Street and Northern Blvd Depot.
These buses went to Surface Transit and were renumbered and several operated on their Manhattan based routes such as the 101 and 104 the rest went to the Bronx.
These buses were specifically excluded from the condemnation of 1962.
These were never referred to as Bingham Macks! The Bigham Macks were those purchased by the Board of Transportation and were equipped to carry stretchers as Civil Defense vehicles.
Unlike the Fifth Avenue Coach and Board of Transportation buses that were 96 inches wide, Chicago Motor Coach also acquired eight buses that were 102 inches wide.

How well I still recall the tough, swaggering "Bulldogs" of Your's Truly's long-ago "Joisey" childhood days!
I've also long associated "Bulldogs" with Staten Island; I can still recall riding a "Bulldog" to South Beach (out of St. George) and back, during the suer of 1962.
For a good chunk of the 1960's, I can only recall seeing Old Looks and "Bulldogs" at St. George.......these were REAL BUSES, and not oversized cardboard cartons!

Here's historic "Bulldog" #6259, silently recalling the good old days, while peacefully dozing at the Jackie Gleason Depot.......
