Further on FACCo garages...........

I wonder what "adaptions" were required as the double-decker fleet was being phased out, and the company was fast transitioning to single-deck operation?

Surely, there had to be some sort of garage "infrastructure" that would no longer be required for maintenance, once the "Cue-Ems" were off the roster..........

Better believe I sure do hope that our good friend "Mr. MaBSTOA 15" will be able to rejoin us again soon; like yourself, he provides a treasure trove of truly outstanding historical bus information (and photos), and, also like yourself, adds tremendous scope to any and all historical "Noo Yawk" bus topics........ .........another aspect of garage/depots in years past would involve the CNG refueling stations at the garages of companies that were then operating CNG buses (i.e. Queens independents)

This is a topic that (IMHO) is seldom discussed, but one I find interesting...........

A shame he's put off by the "debug" messages after he submits his responses (as he's indicated in P.M.'s to me); I mention they come in loud and clear, and if I submit a response and get that message, I go back to the message page, refresh it, and there it is.

I told him the EXACT same thing, just the other day, in a PM; hopefully, finally, he'll be able to rejoin us here once again, and post those outstanding vintage bus photos he's long been noted for! Wink

Vintage garage photos I'd love to see...........

These would be photos depicting the shop areas of the various garages/depots where the roller curtains were maintained, replaced, altered, or stored.

Photos like these would indeed be a treasure trove for those of us today, who are so greatly intrigued by roller curtains..... Wink

Further...........

I would have loved to have seen photos documenting the arrivals of the "Are-Tee-Es" at the various garages; also, photos showing then undergoing trials.

I'd especially like to see photos of "MaBSTOA" RTS being introduced to garage staff.

While on the subject of the now-iconic "Are-Tee-Es".........

When did they first replace Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" on the express runs from Staten Island?

I would assume that the older buses "bumped" off of the express runs were then relegated to less "prestigious" runs.

Other photos that would be most interesting would be those showing former carhouses being converted into garages for "the new kids on the block".............

I'd say the 1981-82 period was when the "Torpedoes" began being seen on express bus routes. Remember, until their time in "Noo Yawk" crashed and burned, the Grumman "Borough Bombers" also saw express bus service.

I seem to remember in the mid-'80's, one of the Brooklyn-Manhattan express bus routes, on the electronic signs, had Cropsey Avenue misspelled as "Crospey."

W.B.

Thanks; appreciate the info.

I had forgotten that the "Bombers" also once worked the express routes.

I've also seen early 1980s photos of borrowed WAMATA "Dangerfields" working on the "Isle of Staten" express runs..........

Weren't some of those WMATA "Dangerfields" that traveled on those express routes among those lost in that Edgewater pier collapse?

W.B.:

Don't quote me on this, but I think you are right.

Interestingly, from about 1995 through 1997, a WMATA "Dangerfield" (most likely one that bailed out the "Bombers" in "Noo Yawk", years before) ran on the old NHBL #1 (to JSQ); I rode this bus every weekday morning until it finally disappeared.

STILL had VERY comfortable "bucket" seats (in decent shape); the fare box was an ANCIENT Johnson "D", that obviously had been in use on several generations of "Boulevard" buses since at least the 50s! Shocked

Man, it was fun while it lasted! (DON'T ask me why I never took pics!) Razz
